We work together to answer some of the most important questions about the causes, prevention and treatment of disease. The Department has around 900 staff, students and academic visitors working in a number of world-renowned population health research groups, including the Clinical Trial Service Unit and Epidemiological Studies Unit (CTSU), the Cancer Epidemiology Unit (CEU), the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU) and other groups working on public health, health economics, ethics and health record linkage. The role It has been known for many years that a person’s risks of developing a wide range of different diseases are due to a complex interplay of different factors, including their lifestyle, environment and genes. UK Biobank has been designed to allow the reliable assessment of the relevance of a very wide range of exposures to a wide range of diseases and is an openaccess resource available to researchers from the academic, commercial, charity and public sectors – without preferential access – for all types of health-related research. It is important that data on health outcomes are available for all UK Biobank participants in as much detail as possible to enable robust research into their genetic and non-genetic determinants. Linkage to routine electronic health records, supplemented with information from self-reported questionnaires and other remote methods, can be used to characterise health outcomes in a comprehensive and accurate manner. However, to increase the usability and interpretability of the data, it is important that data from disparate sources can be combined into ‘research-ready’ health outcomes that can be easily interpreted by nonspecialists. This is a new post and provides an exciting opportunity to develop the scientific strategy of how to phenotype health outcomes in a scalable and comprehensive manner and to generate “research-ready” health outcomes for the global research community. The post holder will be encouraged to publish their work as part of a programme of research dedicated to health outcome phenotyping and will work closely with a team of epidemiologists and data analysts based in NDPH and at the UK Biobank co-ordinating centre in Stockport on research projects that utilise and build on these techniques. The post will be based at Oxford Population Health within the Oxpop/Big Data Institute at the University of Oxford, with regular liaison and travel to the UK Biobank Co-ordinating Centre (Cheadle) and London.
