The role The School of Geography and the Environment and Brasenose College are delighted to offer the exciting opportunity of a Departmental Lectureship to provide cover for Professor Giles Wiggs during his fixed-term period as Head of School (SoGE). The successful candidate will be expected to give high-quality lectures, classes and tutorials in Geography at undergraduate level. The successful candidate will have a strong research interest in earth surface processes and be required to support the research of Professor Wiggs in the field of aeolian dust emissions. This will require the successful candidate to have research skills particularly focussing on remote sensing of contemporary dust emissions from dry lake beds in deserts. Responsibilities The Departmental Lecturer will be a member of both Oxford University and Brasenose College. They will be part of a lively and intellectually stimulating research community that performs to the highest international levels in research and publications and will have access to the excellent research facilities that Oxford offers. The main duties of the post in the School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE) are as follows: Teaching and Supervision: Under the direction of the Head of School the role is primarily focused on teaching in aspects of Geomorphology, Physical Geography and commensurate with needs on; • Core courses in the Undergraduate Programme, including the Preliminary (1st year) course Earth Surface Processes and the Final Honours School (2nd and 3rd year) course Earth System Dynamics; • Option course (2nd and 3rd year) on desert landscapes and dynamics; • Methods teaching in physical geography. The postholder will be required to: • Plan and organise specific areas of the syllabus and contribute to syllabus development modifying course design, content, or delivery and propose changes as appropriate; • Help design, supervise, and attend undergraduate residential field classes; • Engage in University assessment and examining; • Act as a contact for student matters relating to attendance, conduct, coursework, performance, and welfare (referring matters to appropriate others); • Contribute to the supervision and assessment of doctoral students as appropriate. 2 Research • In collaboration with Professor Wiggs identify sources of research income, develop proposals, and make funding applications specifically in the field of quantifying aeolian dust emissions from dry lake beds in desert environments; • Write research articles for peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and reviews, present papers at conferences, and lead seminars to disseminate research findings; Citizenship and Administration • Share in the work of departmental committees developing academic strategies and policies • Co-operate in the teaching and administrative work of the School of Geography and the Environment in both term and vacation under the direction of the Head of School On behalf of the University the post-holder will be required to undertake duties at Brasenose College: • Deliver six hours of high-quality undergraduate tutorial teaching per week averaged over three eight-week terms. The College operates a ‘weighted hours’ scheme, under which a one-to-one tutorial counts as one stint hour, a double tutorial as 1.25 hours; a triple as 1.5 hours. Tutorials consist of an hour of academic discussion between tutor and students, and tutors are expected to mark written work as part of each tutorial. • Take a leading role in, and responsibility for, organising the teaching of Geography within the College; • Teach 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students the full range of topics in physical geography for Preliminary papers (Earth Systems Processes, Geographical Controversies, Geographical Techniques) and FHS papers (Earth System Dynamics, Environmental Geography, Geographical Thought) and associated revision classes; • Deliver teaching in theory and methods of geographical research; • Supervise undergraduate dissertations; • Undertake other teaching duties as appropriate, including termly collections (College exams), providing regular feedback and submitting student reports, and participating in reviews of student progress; • Take a lead in the undergraduate and graduate admissions processes for Geography candidates; • Take a lead in the organisation of Geography within the college, and to encourage student engagement with their subject; • Have responsibility for pastoral care for undergraduate and graduate students; • Act as College Adviser for graduate students (a signposting role distinct from thesis supervision); • Participate in college open days and be willing to participate in other outreach and access activities; • Take part in the administration of the college by participation in committees; • Engage in advanced study and research. 3 Selection criteria Essential selection criteria • Have or be close to completing a relevant PhD/DPhil in physical geography with a specialism in aeolian geomorphology and desert dust emission; • Demonstrable research skills in using remote sensing techniques to quantify aeolian dust emissions from dry lake beds and experience of analysing and interpreting surface geochemistry of dry lake bed sediments; • An aptitude for teaching students with high ability, have awareness of pedagogic methods including experience with small-group teaching, and experience of giving classes and lectures; • Sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject to develop new teaching materials; • Demonstrate the clear potential to build a research record, including the publication of research in refereed journals and the ability to write research proposals; • Excellent communication, interpersonal undergraduates and graduate students; and organisational skills to support • Experience of academic administration; • A commitment to promoting a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace; Desirable selection criteria • Experience of welfare and pastoral responsibilities; • Experience of conducting undergraduate admissions; • Experience of fieldwork in teaching or research; Pre-employment screening Standard checks If you are offered the post, the offer will be subject to standard pre-employment checks.
