EBV is ubiquitous but causes cancers resulting in more than 100,000 deaths each year globally. It also is increasingly thought to play a role in the causation of autoimmune / inflammatory diseases, including multiple sclerosis. There is currently no licensed vaccine. Rabies causes around 60,000 deaths per year globally, mostly in Africa and Asia. Although there are vaccines available, they are currently considered too expensive for mass pre-exposure use. You will lead the immunology work of the group. This will be primarily focused on clinical trial immunology, but also includes experimental medicine and pre-clinical development of vaccine candidates. This will be focused on EBV and rabies, but may develop in other areas depending on the evolution of research programmes within the Douglas group. Commensurate with its seniority, the role will also include mentoring and supervision of graduate students and less experienced staff. We are working with a novel rabies vaccine, ChAdOx2 RabG, which is currently the subject of two clinical trials, with a third being planned. The EBV vaccine programme is at the pre-clinical stage of development, with clinical trials expected to commence in the next 1-2 years. There are associated early-stage programme also looking at shedding of EBV by carriers, as well as the development of monoclonal antibodies. The Jenner Institute is a global leader in vaccine development and provides an outstanding academic environment. The post will provide exposure to a spectrum of vaccine development activity, encompassing multiple target organisms and spanning from pre-clinical discovery to Phase III clinical efficacy trials. Responsibilities You will: • • Lead immunological studies, experimental medicine, and vaccine development work targeting EBV and rabies, plus other disease areas that develop within the team. This will include: o Develop research questions; o Testing, reviewing and refining working hypotheses; o Experimental design, execution, analysis and reports; o Adapting existing scientific techniques and develop new techniques and protocols; o Undertaking research using clinical samples; o Ensuring quality assurance and regulatory compliance relating to human research samples and data integrity; o Collaborating with clinical and non-clinical partners at Oxford and other institutions. Supervise and develop other members of the team, including Research Assistants, DPhil students, and Masters students. This will include: o Agreeing on clear task objectives, organising, and delegating work to other members of the team; o Coaching other members of the group on specialist methodologies and protocols. 2 • • • • • Contribute to other research areas within the group, including the development and testing of other vaccines and immunological studies. Regularly write research articles of internationally-leading quality for peer-reviewed journals. Present papers at international conferences, and lead seminars to disseminate research findings. Raise research funds through grant applications, and manage your own area of a larger research budget. Share responsibility for shaping the research group’s plans and the writing of group-funding applications for new research projects. Represent the group through: • • • • Liaising with funders, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders. Representing the group at external and internal meetings/committees advising on scientific and management matters. Participating in and supporting the public engagement and widening access activities of the Department and the University. This is anticipated to be not more than 2 days per year. Undertaking mandatory training as required by the University, Division and Department. The specific list of training courses may change from time-to-time, in response to both legal and internal University requirements. Selection criteria Essential • • • • • • • • Hold a relevant PhD/DPhil with post-qualification research experience in biological or medical sciences. Ability to independently plan and manage research projects. Experience of antibody/B cell immunology, clinical research immunology, experimental medicine, and/or vaccine research. Ability to manage and ensure quality assurance of clinical trial data and human research samples, with strong attention to detail. Skills in problem-solving and critical thinking. Excellent interpersonal and management skills, with experience of collaborative research projects and supervising staff and/or students. Strong publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the fields of vaccine development, antibodies, experimental medicine, and/or virology. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings. Desirable • • • • • Experience of isolation and characterisation of novel monoclonal antibodies, molecular biology, virology, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and/or the use of animal models. Experience of managing and analysing large datasets using packages such as R, Stata, Python or similar. Experience making grant applications.
