The main emphasis of research in the Cancer Epidemiology Unit (Director: Professor Gillian Reeves;) is on providing large-scale reliable evidence on the relationship between common exposures (such as obesity, diet, smoking, alcohol, the use of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, endogenous hormones, shift-work), as well as molecular and genetic factors, and common conditions of public health importance such as breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers, cardiovascular disease and fractures. Much of this work centres on large scale cohort studies (EPIC, the Million Women Study, UK Biobank), and on the several International Collaborative Groups based in the Unit. Current research areas also include work on statistical and epidemiological methodology, and a programme of work related to the National Health Service screening programmes for breast, cervical and bowel cancers. About Oxford Population Health Oxford Population Health (the Nuffield Department of Population Health) provides an excellent environment for multi-disciplinary research and teaching and for professional and support staff. We work together to answer some of the most important questions about the causes, prevention and treatment of disease. The first project is to work within the the Cancer Epidemiology Unit (0.6 FTE) The role within the Cancer Epidemiology Unit (CEU) is to support the delivery of an exciting new programme of work addressing important outstanding questions about the associations of ethnicity and breast cancer. This work is funded by a three year Cancer Research UK project grant awarded to Dr Toral Gathani in the CEU. Epidemiologist job description, May 2024 3 The focus of the role will be to support delivering the research objectives of this project, as well as helping to develop future research programmes. The successful post holder will report to Dr Toral Gathani and will be a member of the Cancer Epidemiology Unit. The research objectives are to: 1) Describe breast cancer incidence and prevalence of known risk factors for the disease in Indian, Pakistani, Black Caribbean, Black African and white women using large prospective cohort and routine cancer registry data. 2) Summarise the barriers and facilitators to the early diagnosis of breast cancer in ethnic minority women through a qualitative evidence synthesis. 3) Assess the feasibility and acceptability of establishing a national multicentre case-case study of incident invasive breast cancer cases, adequately powered to examine the associations of tumour characteristics with ethnicity after accounting for differences in known risk factors. The programme of work includes these specific research projects as well as developing and supporting a national Ethnicity and Breast Cancer Working Group (EBCWG), and an ethnically diverse Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) panel. The second project is to work within the UK Biobank team (0.4 FTE) The post-holder will be part of an epidemiological team that helps conduct the scientific review of applications to use the UK Biobank resource, and of annual reports and other outputs, from researchers currently using the resource. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to epidemiological research using the UK Biobank resource, using statistical methods that take advantage of the breadth of genetic and phenotypic data available in UK Biobank. This post will be based in the Big Data Institue within the Nuffield Department of Population Health and will report to Associate Professor Ben Lacey.
