The team consists of 6 staff and one apprentice who work both in the workshop based at the Malthouse as well as across the University when required. As members of the Guild of Master-craftsmen, the University Joiners operate at a very high level and are expected to complete complex repairs and construction of furniture and elements of buildings utilising power machinery and hand tools. This work will take place at the Joinery workshop as well as onsite where the joinery assistant will be expected to work with limited supervision within the discussed guidelines in which the allocated task will take place. While working, the Joinery assistant will be expected to interact with stakeholders when required including building managers and other building users when necessary. They are also expected to adhere to all Health and safety practices and regulations while working. There will be times when working outside will be required as some repairs or installations will be external building elements. The University Joinery team work on some of the most prestigious buildings within the University of Oxford Estate including listed buildings where Joiners are expected to collaborate and work with other teams and sections from Estates Services as well as external contractors. Responsibilities • • • • The Joinery Assistant will have the following responsibilities: To carry out general housekeeping duties across the Joinery Service work-space, rest area and external locations in accordance with instructions and guidelines from the Joinery Service Manager. To collaborate with and support the other Joinery Service team members in their day-to-day activities, which shall include but not be limited to manual lifting, attendance at the site of works and driving a university supplied motor vehicle. To work in a friendly, busy and supportive team and working on multiple projects with varying • • • responsibilities. To support and collaborate with the staff of other Estates Services Division teams and sections as instructed by the Joinery Service Manager. To support with basic joinery tasks, including basic decorating. Other reasonable duties to enable FM to deliver its service levels. Selection criteria Essential selection criteria • • • • • • To be able to work as part of a team To be approachable with a positive attitude, be organised and have attention to detail Have some record of dealing with basic joinery tasks, including basic decorating Ability to maintain and manage their own workload with limited input including as appropriate, record keeping Experience of customer service with client management Full UK driving licence Desirable selection criteria • Work experience in Joinery/Carpentry . Facilities Management at the University of Oxford Standing regulations in the form of ‘The Estates Regulations’ are issued by the Building and Estates Sub Committee (BESC) under the authority of Council, which apply to all University buildings within the functional estate. The Estates regulations divide the responsibilities for maintaining University buildings between BESC (delivered by the Estates Services) and the occupying department. This is embedded as common practice within the University. OUES deliver, in general ‘Hard FM’ services and are responsible for Mechanical, Electrical and structural disciplines. ‘Soft’ services’, day to day maintenance, Health and Safety and management of departmental specific equipment are a departmental responsibility. OUES Facilities Management – Background The Estates Services has a growing responsibility for Facilities Management (FM) throughout the University’s estate. Historically, FM has been largely organised locally, by occupying departments. The benefits of a professional approach to FM are now more widely recognised, however significant opportunities still remain. The Estates Services currently have responsibility for the provision of the FM function for approx. 20% (120,000 sqm) of the current functional estate. This has increased year on year as departments recognise the benefits of a professional FM service and of their existing FM managers becoming part of a broader FM team.
