The Initiative aims to support the work of universities and research institutions across Africa and to facilitate the development of equitable and extensive collaborations between Oxford and African institutions. AfOx has a cross divisional governance structure and is embedded administratively in the Nuffield Department of Medicine. The AfOx Graduate Scholarships aim to provide outstanding African graduates with the opportunity to undertake a fully funded Master’s degree at the University of Oxford. AfOx also recognises that providing meaningful support goes beyond just providing course fees and living costs but also offering bespoke training programmes, networking opportunities and support for students before, during and after their time in Oxford. Therefore, we are looking for someone who will contribute to shaping and delivering this support for students. Responsibilities You will: • • • • • • • • • • • Work closely with Scholarship Manager to contribute to the design and delivery of the AfOx Scholarship Programme in identifying areas in which the AfOx Scholars might need support throughout the academic year. Support the AfOx scholars as they prepare to come to Oxford (for example, being available to answer their questions) and work closely with the AfOx Operations Team and other relevant AfOx staff to do so. Take the lead on planning and delivering the orientation programme and ‘catch up’ sessions for scholars. Contribute to the shaping and delivery of key programming events for scholars (such as the retreat and the ‘catch up’ sessions ”). Work closely with the AfOx Scholarship Manager and AfOx Graduate Scholarship alumni to design and structure the alumni programme. Collect feedback from scholars about their Oxford experience towards the end of the academic year. Attend AfOx events – particularly those that are offered for the scholars. Assist with writing and editing blogs, taking pictures and contributing to other related content for the AfOx social media accounts and website. Provide support to the AfOx team’s overall goals and mission – this can include providing research and administrative support. Participate in and support the public engagement and widening access activities of the Department and the University. This is anticipated to be not more than 2 days per year. Undertake mandatory training as required by the University, Division and Department. The specific list of training courses may change from time-to-time, in response to both legal and internal University requirements. 1 Selection criteria Essential • • • • • • • • • Be educated to A-Level standard or equivalent. Excellent interpersonal, advocacy and diplomacy skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. Demonstrable experience of recognising challenges faced by students and developing programmes to support them. Demonstrable facilitation skills, including designing engaging sessions for AfOx programmes and effectively facilitating group discussions. Have excellent communications skills, both written and verbal. Have awareness and knowledge of issues concerning to students. Be passionate about supporting graduate students. Demonstrable experience working with teams. Experience in event organisation (i.e. in planning, organisation and/or delivery). Desirable • • • Have existing networks with graduate students. Be up to date with any issues or concerns related to African students in Oxford. Experience of working with or advocating for graduate students.
