Hybrid working is available The role The Senior Developer – BI post is in the BI team of the Data Reporting, Architecture and Modelling part of the Software Solutions group of IT Services. The BI team is responsible for supporting the University’s central Data Warehouse and Reporting Tools as well as providing project resource for Business Intelligence projects. The post holder will take a lead role in the Software Solutions Group in developing and supporting applications built on the Microsoft BI technology stack. In particular they will be responsible for development of the Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes used to move data for source systems and remodel it into warehouse structures that are easily consumable by reporting tools. The post-holder will have a thorough knowledge of the use of the Microsoft BI stack, will be a source of technical expertise to the team and will lead the design, coding and testing of developments in this technology. In addition, they will be willing to learn and take the lead on other BI technologies when necessary and appropriate. Hybrid working is available Responsibilities • Understand the technical issues and data challenges of the University and provide technical input as to how these may be met. • Take a lead role in the design, coding, testing and documentation of developments, working from functional specifications or detailed change requests. • Liaise closely with the Functional Analysts, Business Analysts and users through all stages of design, development and testing to ensure that developments meet the users’ requirements. • Prioritise, estimate and schedule work. Report any scheduling or work load/resource issues. • Provide support and maintenance for production systems. • In areas of technical specialism, implement, review, manage and maintain common approaches for the entire team. Provide leadership, training and supervision, where appropriate, to other developers. • Keep up to date with technical developments. Extend skills and knowledge and highlight any potential technical opportunities. Selection criteria Essential selection criteria • Education to degree level in a computing or IT related subject or able to offer the equivalent in terms of professional training and experience. • Broad technical knowledge including expert knowledge of the Microsoft BI stack particularly SQL Server (SQL and TSQL) and SSIS. • Good knowledge of database design, in particular Data Warehousing theories. • A strong understanding of the full lifecycle of software development gained from previous employment in a commercial software development environment or major software implementation project. • Careful attention to detail and an ability to demonstrate an understanding of the need for programming and documentation standards in development work. • The ability to meet tight deadlines through a creative approach to problem-solving along with an adaptable and flexible attitude towards the demands of the job. • The ability to work within, and contribute to, a team environment and build and maintain effective working relationships with customers, users and colleagues within the wider project team. • The ability to manage, plan and take responsibility for a range of tasks involving interaction with other developers, business analysts or users. • The ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues at all levels in both verbal and written communications.
