Overview of the post The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA), and St Antony’s College seek to recruit an Associate Professor in Global and Area Studies (GAS). The post is an exciting and demanding one in which the successful candidate will undertake advanced, internationally excellent research in Global and Area Studies; teach and supervise at the graduate level; contribute to research, admissions, examining, assessment; and to the academic administration of OSGA and the College. The post-holder will have an office for research and teaching in the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies, 11 Bevington Road. The successful candidate will devote most of their time to a unique and exciting multi-disciplinary, cross-regional master’s programme in Global and Area Studies established in 2021 at the University of Oxford. In addition to acting as Director of the GAS programme, the post holder will contribute to core and option teaching in Global and Area Studies. They will also provide master’s and doctoral supervision. This position is full-time and, subject to successful completion of the probationary period, permanent. The post is tenable from the start of the 2025/26 academic year or as soon as possible thereafter and applications from those at an early, mid, or advanced career stage are welcome. This is a joint appointment with St Antony’s College, where the appointee will be a member of both OSGA and St Antony’s Governing Body and a non-tutorial fellow of the College. Applications for the post will be invited from Area Studies specialists who undertake outstanding regionally contextualised social science research into issues of global importance. This research should make use of comparative/transnational approaches and/or engage with key “disciplinary” Area Studies debates. We particularly welcome applications from candidates conducting research into one or more transnational issues, for example democratization, migration, gender, health, environment or trade. Candidate’s research should cover more than one country, and ideally cross the boundaries of two or more OSGA programmes. In particular, we are seeking candidates whose research addresses the world regions covered by the school, with preference given to Africa, China, Japan, Latin America and/or the Middle East. OSGA use ‘stint units’ to measure teaching and supervision contributions up to a maximum of 288 teaching units per year. Offer of employment Applications for this post will be considered by a selection committee containing representatives from both OSGA and St Antony’s College. The selection committee is responsible for conducting all aspects of the recruitment and selection process; it does not, however, have the authority to make the final decision as to who should be appointed. The final decision will be made by the Social Sciences divisional board and the Governing Body of St Antony’s College on the basis of a recommendation made by the selection committee. No offer of appointment will be valid, therefore, until and unless the recommendation has been approved by both the divisional board and the governing body, and a formal contractual offer has been made. As there is no charge to the Associate Professor for their participation, this benefit may give rise to a small tax liability.
