Nature. 2017 Aug 16 The role The Patel laboratory is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher to lead a research project focusing on tissue-specific responses to endogenous DNA damage. This position will particularly suit a candidate with an interest in the DNA damage response and cell cycle, and with a strong track record in mouse genetics and molecular biology. You will be based in the in the Patel laboratory and will work directly with Professor KJ Patel and his team as well as with other investigators in the MRC Molecular Haematology Unit. The Patel group is a world-renowned lab researching the sources of endogenous DNA damage in blood stems and peripheral tissues. Recent studies have identified simple aldehydes such as acetaldehyde (by-product of alcohol breakdown) and formaldehyde as potent sources of endogenous DNA damage. However, little is known where these aldehydes come from, how they damage DNA and what are the consequences of this to a mammal. Responsibilities • To manage the project intellectually and technically using experience, methodical approaches, attention to detail and evaluation of the literature in DNA repair, cell cycle regulation, cellular metabolism, haematopoiesis, functional in vivo and in vitro assays and CRISPR/Cas9 technologies. This involves organizing and prioritizing work efficiently and effectively and taking personal responsibility for assigned tasks. • To carefully document experiments and write clear, updated experimental protocols and scientific techniques for existing and new laboratory methods. • To test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate. • To coordinate interactions with collaborators to ensure key research experiments are completed in a timely manner. • To clearly and succinctly present research data at internal laboratory and scientific meetings and externally at conferences. • To contribute ideas for new research projects and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers. To also develop ideas for generating research income. • To continuously broaden, deepen and consolidate scientific and technical knowledge and skill through reading, scientific seminars, training opportunities and meetings. The MRC Molecular Haematology Unit (MRC MHU) was founded in 1980 and is located in the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford, at the John Radcliffe Hospital. The Unit includes 14 research teams with over 100 scientists who share a common interest in understanding the process by which multipotential haemopoietic stem cells become committed and differentiate into the highly specialised cells found in the peripheral blood (red cells, granulocytes, lymphocytes and platelets).
