The role The post, funded by Novo Nordisk, is available immediately, or as soon as possible thereafter for 24 months, with the possibility of further extension. The successful applicant will join an established team of medicinal chemists working under the direct supervision Professor Angela Russell, on a collaborative project with scientists at the Novo Nordisk Research Centre Oxford (NNRCO). The project involves the discovery and medicinal chemistry optimisation of small molecule modulators of metabolic function and new target discovery using human cellular models. We have already performed a phenotypic screen using these models which has yielded several small molecule hit series. The successful candidate’s role will be to optimise the chemistry around these hits in close collaboration with colleagues at NNCRO, with the objective of progressing to a robust lead molecule for proof of concept efficacy studies and to enable concomitant target deconvolution studies. This is an exciting opportunity to work in an industry-academia collaboration with world leading researchers and contribute to the development of innovative new therapeutic approaches for metabolic disorders, an area of significant unmet medical need. The Russell Research group Our research lies at the interface of Chemistry and Biomedicine and aims to break new ground in the basic science of discovery of new molecules and mechanisms to manipulate cell fate and translate them into therapeutic agents, particularly to tackle the diseases of ageing. Our main themes of research are: (1) Stem cell chemistry “Stemistry” for regenerative medicine; (2) New treatments for neuromuscular disease; (3) Cancer medicinal chemistry and diagnostics and (4) Anti-inflammatory agents. Responsibilities 1. Manage own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines 2. Adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols 3. Test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate 4. Contribute ideas for new research projects 5. Develop ideas for generating research income, and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers 6. Undertake comprehensive and systematic literature reviews and write up the results for publication in peer-reviewed journals 7. Hold a PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or Chemical Biology or a related area (or be close to completion), prior to taking up the appointment). 2. Have recent experience in synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry (including but not limited to compound optimisation for in vivo proof of concept studies) and de novo drug design / development, as well as at least two of asymmetric synthesis, chemical biology, amino acid chemistry, nucleotide chemistry, sugar/amino sugar chemistry. 3. Have expertise and a thorough knowledge of modern organic synthesis, and a strong working knowledge of medicinal chemistry. Particular evidence will be sought of deeper understanding of the applicant’s previous fields of research and evidence of independent intellectual and practical contributions to previous research projects - as evidence that such attributes can be brought to bear on the present project. Have an excellent general knowledge of related areas through reading of the literature, online database searching, and attendance at seminars and conferences. 4. Be able to design and execute reaction sequences in organic synthesis. 5. Be viewed as a motivated, enthusiastic, organised self-starter; one who can work with a minimum of supervision but at the same time extract the benefits of an excellent research environment. 6. Have an excellent general knowledge of related areas through reading of the literature, online database searching, and attendance at seminars and conferences. 7.
