This role meets the criteria for a UK Skilled Worker visa Therapy development for rare neurological diseases Principal Investigator Prof Carlo Rinaldi / supervisor Project team Rinaldi Lab Project web site https://www.idrm.ox.ac.uk/research/neurology Funding partner The funds supporting this research project are provided by a gift agreement The role Reporting to Dr. Carlo Rinaldi, who is based at the IDRM, the post holder will be a member of the Rinaldi lab, with responsibility for carrying out research to understand the genetics and neurobiology underlying neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, with the ultimate goal to develop treatments for these conditions. The post holder will also work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and provide guidance to other members of the research group, including other postdocs, research assistants, technicians, and PhD and project students. The Rinaldi lab (https://www.rinaldi-lab.com/) has access to unique disease modelling systems (e.g. stem cells-derived neurons and organoids on a chip) and numerous datasets of varying scales on university computer clusters and cloud-based services (AWS and Google). This post offers a uniquely rich opportunity to manage data assets and deploy data processing and analysis pipelines on the genomic data as part of the research projects with direct relevance to human diseases. Responsibilities • Generate, maintain and differentiate induced pluripotent stem cells from affected and unaffected individuals into neurons (i.e. cortical and motor neurons). • Conduct detailed analysis of datasets in collaboration with colleagues in partner institutions and research groups. • Harness knowledge on the regulatory mechanisms of gene expression to develop therapies for rare neurological diseases with unmet clinical need. • Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on data access and methodologies, techniques, and protocols and to document these in the laboratory codebase and information base. • Liaising with other project teams, external sites, and data repositories to receive, share, and/or deposit data. • Write research articles. Present papers at national conferences, and lead seminars to disseminate research finding. • Attend scientific seminars, meetings, and training, as appropriate, and represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone. • Develop ideas for generating research income, and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers. Experience with stem cell culture. Demonstrable experience, ability, and practical success in genetics, biostatistics, and/or bioinformatics, including experience of contributing to publications and presentations. Clear understanding of patient-centred and translational research. Ability to manage own academic research and associated activities. Ability to collaborate with colleagues and advise other researchers both in-person and remotely. Ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation. Demonstrable ability to organise and prioritise work efficiently whilst delivering results to the required standard and to an agreed schedule. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publications, design and generate figures reflecting data analyses, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings. Desirable • • • • • Hold an MD degree. Experience in clinical trial and/or clinical research. Experience of independently managing a research project. Experience of research into the genetics of neurodevelopmental disorders. Experience with the analysis of genetic and/or functional genomic data.
