The Department of Computer Science has an exciting new opportunity for a
postdoctoral researcher on Quantum Causal Structures. The project is fixed-
term until 30 September 2019 and is funded by the John Templeton Foundation.
You will be working within the groups of Professor Bob Coecke and Dr J
Barrett. The project is a large-scale international collaboration between
groups based at the Universities of Oxford, Vienna (Austria), Pavia (Italy),
Hong Kong (China), Queensland (Australia), and Western Ontario (Canada), and
at Perimeter Institute (Canada).
You will be expected to conduct original academic research by investigating
the role that causality plays in quantum theory. Topics include: quantum
generalisations of classical causal models; causal inference in situations
where quantum systems are involved; the description of quantum indefinite
causality with application to protocols and algorithms; and the development of
a categorical approach to quantum causal structures, with a corresponding
diagrammatic formalism.
You will require a PhD (or close to completion) in a relevant area of science
or related discipline, together with a documented track record of the ability
to conduct and complete research projects, as witnessed by published peer-
reviewed work (according to the experience of the candidate) in at least one
of the areas of quantum foundations, quantum information science, or
categorical quantum theory and should possess excellent communication skills,
including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and
results, and represent the research group at meetings. Experience of
independently managing a discrete area of a research project is highly
desirable.
