(pro rata). £9.00 per hour Hours Variable Contract type Permanent Reporting to Deputy Visitor Experience Manager Vacancy reference 138004 Additional information This role involves interacting with visitors while moving around galleries. The ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods is required, since there is limited opportunity to sit during the shift. This job includes varied working patterns and positions which will include working alone or in part of a team. You should be able to work weekends when required, with flexibility to support museum events. The role As a Visitor Experience Assistant (VEA) you will travel across cultures and across time while rotating positions through the galleries in your working day. You will interact with visitors from a variety of backgrounds, delivering key messages and supporting the operational requirements of the Museum to ensure our collections are accessible for all. Our Visitor Experience team is the largest team in the Ashmolean. As part of that team, you will be one of 60 VEAs who are all working to deliver a world class visitor experience within the Museum, and who are supported by a team of supervisors, managers and a head of department. You’ll also have the support of over 100 volunteers who help enrich the Ashmolean experience for our visitors, bringing the stories behind our collections to life. You will be supporting the Ashmolean in a number of areas – the experience you will deliver is the driving force behind our growing visitor numbers and helps to support museum commercial activity. You will welcome visitors to the Museum, engaging them in the collections and inspiring them to make the most of their visit. Additionally, our VEAs undertake vital work to support our security team. In the event of an emergency we would expect you to use all of the training you have received to assist visitors and staff members to evacuate the premises (in line with the emergency planning the Museum has completed). To help you achieve this, you will receive comprehensive and structured training, alongside regular reviews and one-to-one meetings with your manager. You will be enthusiastic and approachable when engaging with the Museum’s visitors, especially when they require additional information, direction or support. You will help to keep areas clean and tidy to keep the Museum looking at its best as well as to help prevent any slip or trip hazards. This will be a part of your working routine, and you may receive additional instructions regarding specific areas by a manager. You will encourage our visitors to donate using the sales training and support offered by our team. You will be crucial to supporting the Ashmolean’s commercial efforts. Communication You will actively encourage visitor feedback and escalate their feedback to a manager, where appropriate, to ensure that our visitors feel supported and valued. You will be expected to respond to visitors’ problems in a diplomatic and informed way while ensuring that they receive an exceptional level of customer service. Where appropriate you will follow the escalation process and ensure a manager is contacted for support. You will attend team training days, meetings, daily briefings, and one-to-one meetings with your manager, as communication is vital to ensuring that the team and the Museum run smoothly. You will participate in relevant induction, training, consultation and other activities as required, within the Museum or the wider University. Safety & Standards You will be expected to ensure your personal presentation standards are high and that the uniform is worn in line with training and guidance. Our team hold each other accountable for maintaining the agreed standards, as we believe that our personal presentation is an integral part of delivering an excellent visitor experience. You must uphold the Museum’s Health, Safety & Security requirements to ensure that all of our visitors receive a world class experience. You will be trained on how to assist visitors and staff members to evacuate the premises in the event of an emergency (in line with the emergency planning the Museum has completed). Should such an emergency arise, you will be vital to ensuring that the risk to the public, staff and volunteers is minimised. You will need to carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade of this post. Often, other small jobs need to be completed, and your manager may ask you to pick up ad-hoc tasks or duties which are of a similar nature or level of responsibility to those listed in your job description.
