Research Associate - Unlocking the Potential of AI for English Law

A new vacancy has arisen for a Research Associate in “Unlocking the Potential
of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for English Law”. This project is
interdisciplinary, involving colleagues from Computer Science, Economics,
Education, Law, Social Policy, and the Saïd Business School, who will be
working together with a range of private-sector partners.



As a member of Professor Thomas Lukasiewicz’s research group, you will be
responsible for carrying out research towards exploring the frontiers of AI in
legal reasoning (in particular: intelligent search in AI for law; legal
information extraction; and AI-based legal analytics and reasoning). In doing
so, you will collaborate both with Professor Lukasiewicz and the other
Principal Investigator, Professor John Armour in the Faculty of Law. You will
also provide guidance to junior members of the research group, including PhD
students, MSc students, and/or project volunteers. You are also expected to
interact with Principal Investigators and researchers undertaking other work
packages in the research grant.



You will hold a PhD/DPhil (or be close to completion) in computer science,
mathematics, statistics, engineering, computational linguistics, or related
discipline, together with relevant experience, and possess good (theoretical
and programming) background in machine learning, knowledge representation and
reasoning, and data science (desirably in deep learning and neural networks,
deep-learning-based representations, knowledge bases and graphs, ontology
languages, natural language processing, information retrieval, data
extraction, and data analytics), as well as good software engineering skills
(especially in system implementations and experimental evaluations). A prior
background in working with legal data is highly desirable.
