This is an exciting opportunity for a senior scientist with expertise in translational research to lead on one of the following research programmes. Enteric Bacteria Enteric fever is a major threat to children in LMICs, with critical research conducted by the OVG team in the UK and across Asia and Africa leading to the deployment of 50 million doses of a first generation vaccine in the past two years. The postholder will work on an exciting programme in which human challenge models for paratyphoid are being used to test new vaccines to protect against enteric fever, a serious bacterial infection of children in low and middle income countries (LMICs) caused by Salmonella species. The new programme focuses on paratyphoid infection in a combination vaccine that could replace the one already deployed. The laboratory research studies will include immunology and microbiology, and coordination of the critical laboratory the endpoints that will define whether these new vaccines will protect children and save lives. Some of the work will require category 3 level work and training will be provided. Other projects in the portfolio include studies of invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella vaccines and evaluation of a new human challenge model against Clostridium difficile. Immunology will include ELISA, EliSpot, systems serology and flow cytometry. Yersinia pestis Yersinia pestis is the cause of plague, a bacterial infection causing increase numbers of outbreaks in Africa, China, Russia, USA with the highest number of reported cases in recent years in Madagascar. This was the cause of the black death in the Middle Ages, which killed up to 50% of the human population. The postholder will work on a programme to develop a new vaccine for plague through design and preclinical experiments and evaluation of human phase I clinical trials. The research will include antigen identification and testing, in vivo studies, and laboratory immunology to evaluate immune responses to the vaccine. Responsibilities • Develop research questions within a specific context, conduct individual research, analysing detailed and complex qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, and generate original ideas by building on existing concepts • Develop, establish, and pursue appropriate analytical protocols and techniques to support research • Regularly write research articles at a national level for peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and reviews.
