The post-holder’s time is likely to be split equally between these two responsibilities. As a technician, the successful candidate will play a key role in sample preparation for mass spectrometric analyses and liaise with those overseeing MS instrumentation. Consequently, prior experience with mass spectrometry including sample preparation from biological material and experience in MS data analysis are highly desirable. The post-holder will work closely with researchers and students in the lab on their projects and will have opportunities to carry out experimental research under the guidance of senior lab members. Alongside your role as a technician, the post-holder will help with the general management, day to day organisation, and smooth operation of the Christianson lab by working with members to maintain inventory and lab stocks of reagents, order consumables, and oversee safety compliance and general maintenance. This will also include organisation and maintenance of lab databases, and induction and guidance of students within the lab. The individual holding this position will have previous laboratory experience, good communication skills, attention to detail and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You must have a proactive and adaptable approach to work and willingness to tackle a variety of tasks and projects in parallel. Excellent record keeping and careful methodological work skills are essential as well as a very organised and structured work ethic. The position will require basic molecular/cellular biology and biochemical techniques, and some advanced ones including but not limited to mass spectrometry, protein biochemistry, and cell culture. Any previous experience with ubiquitin-proteasome biology, protein quality control or membrane protein biochemistry is desirable. Dr. Christianson’s research group is focused on understanding the role that protein quality control mechanisms play in cancer, with their overall aim being to identify novel points of therapeutic intervention. You will work within an interdisciplinary team of experimental scientists working in the field of cell biology and myeloma drug resistance. The Christianson lab is part of the Oxford Translation Myeloma Centre. The Centre is a hub for myeloma research groups to collaborate and develop novel therapeutic interventions that improve patient outcome.. Responsibilities/duties RESPONSIBILTIES - RESEARCH TECHNICIAN • • • • • • Preparation of biological samples originating from different source material (i.e. cell cultures, tissue) for MS processing, including sample pre-fractionation and proteolytic digestion Monitoring of tissue culture cell line integrity and origin. Responsible for organising reagents in fridge, freezer, -80˚C, and liquid nitrogen and maintaining the searchable databases for lab reagents (e.g. Qwartzy) Keep up to date with and advise on matters relating to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Health and Safety, COSHH sheets and other regulations relevant to efficient and safe working of the laboratory. Practical responsibility for ensuring that all laboratory workers are aware of safety legislation and comply with safety assessments and SOPs relating to their work. Ensuring the lab runs smoothly on a day-to-day basis by; monitoring and upkeep of equipment, keeping inventory stocked, and ordering. This includes overseeing the use and maintenance of expensive specialist scientific equipment in a laboratory environment. Liaise with commercial providers and assist in arranging service contracts. There is an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Technician in Mass Spectrometry with some lab management responsibilities in the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS) based at the Botnar Research Centre, Oxford. The laboratory of Prof. John Christianson is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated scientist to work on a research project investigating protein degradation mechanisms in cancer. You will join an interdisciplinary team of experimental scientists working in the fields of cell biology, drug discovery, and myeloma drug resistance as part of a Cancer Research UK funded project at the Oxford Translation Myeloma Centre.


As a Laboratory Technician in our group you will be responsible for preparation of biological samples for MS processing and liaising with our MS facility. You will help to monitor tissue culture cell line integrity and origin, and maintain cell stocks. You will contribute to discussions and share research findings with the lab and colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups. In addition, you will also have some lab management responsibilities that help to keep the lab running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. In this role, you will be helping to track and maintain inventory, overseeing its organisation, and monitoring lab equipment.


You will hold an MSc or BSc (with work experience) in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or analytical chemistry. Experience of working in a laboratory, including knowledge of health and safety regulations, and experience with basic molecular/cell biology techniques are essential. Previous experience of working in Life Science laboratory, experience with mass spectrometry data analysis, and experience in cell or cancer biology, are all desirable.


This is a full-time (part time - 60% to 80% FTE will be considered) fixed term appointment until December 2025.
