We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join the Cancer Genetics and Evolution Research Group led by Professor Ian Tomlinson. The post holder will play an important role in carrying out research into the analysis of germline and somatic mutations in cancers.  The post holder will investigate the role of these genes in colorectal, endometrial and other cancers using a combination of computational/bioinformatics analyses and experimental work in human cancers. The aim is to discover the genes involved, to measure their effects, and to identify their clinical consequences.

 

You will be responsible for performing computational analysis of multiomic data from cancer patients and their tumours, conducting independent work on human cancers and tumour model systems, including tissue sampling and preparation, molecular methods, genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics. You will obtain tissues for analysis, plan and execute laboratory experiments, develop analytical protocols, prepare samples and data for analysis by external groups, write research articles for peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at national conferences.

 

Additionally, you will lead seminars, delegate tasks within the team, operate scientific equipment, liaise with funding bodies and project stakeholders, collaborate with partner institutions, advise and teach laboratory staff, and represent the research group at external meetings and seminars.  This role is offered on a full-time basis and is fixed term until 30 September 2024 in the first instance.

 

 

You will hold an MSc or equivalent with at least 3 years of post-qualification research experience. You will possess excellent computing and data analysis skills coupled with equivalent experimental laboratory skills. Previous experience of contributing to publications and presentations and experience of working in a research team and contributing ideas for new research projects would be advantageous.
