The project, currently in its third year, is funded by the UKRI Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The project investigates how contemporary electoral autocracies, regimes that combine authoritarian practices with multiparty elections, use legal strategies of repression, delegated to bureaucrats and courts, in order to restrict protest and hinder opposition and voter coordination. The project draws empirical evidence from contemporary Russia. It includes quantitative opinion surveys, quantitative and qualitative content analysis, and the collection of protest-event data. The successful candidate will primarily contribute to the design, fielding, and analysis of public opinion surveys, under the supervision of Dr Tertytchnaya. The post can commence as soon as possible after December 1, 2023. As a career development post, the position includes a skills training budget, and budget for international conference attendance. Current Research Associates, doctoral students, have attended the European Political Science Association meeting (EPSA) and received training as part of the Essex Summer School in Quantitative methods. Responsibilities The successful candidate will undertake duties in connection with the project as directed by and developed with Dr Tertytchnaya, including: • Designing, fielding, and analysing opinion surveys in Russia • Collecting data on protest notifications, and protest-events • Maintaining and managing the resultant protest-event datasets and codebooks • Analysis of evidence and joint development of research findings • Archival and publication of data in line with best practice • Authoring academic journal articles and policy outputs • Contribution to other project work packages and sub-projects. • Broader support to the project and its goals, for example through attending team meetings, liaising with partners and stakeholders, assisting in the organisation of events.
