The Oxford Safer Pregnancy Alliance (OSPREA) -Gynaecology team, part of The
Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health seeks to appoint a
Clinical Research Assistant to support the research team in delivery of a key
clinical study.
OSPREA–Gynaecology has a purpose-built research area to recruit and monitor
women and their babies. This is located on Level 4 of the Women’s Centre in
Oxford at the John Radcliffe Hospital. For a list of current studies and

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare genetic condition which can lead to
disability and – at worst - loss of life. The Newborn Screening for SMA study
will open across the Thames Valley in November 2021. The study aims to screen
around 30,000 newborns for SMA over a period of 3 years. Consent for screening
babies using residual blood from their newborn bloodspot samples will be given
by women in their antenatal or immediate postnatal periods. Testing of samples
will be undertaken at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.
The role of the Clinical Research Assistant will primarily be to support the
research team in delivery of the SMA study. This will involve working closely
with the team members running the study to take an active part in supporting
the recruitment process and any related administrative tasks. The post holder
will be responsible for recruiting women into the study, completing the
research documentation and maintaining the study data.
This role will also involve supporting the OSPREA team in delivering other
studies as required by arranging follow-up appointments for recruited women;
completing research documentation; taking clinical observations; and
performing phlebotomy. They will be involved with the collection and
processing of samples as specified below as well as other laboratory-based
tasks. The post holder will also be expected to undertake administrative tasks
relating to clinical research as required.
The suitable candidate must be educated to GCSE level, including English and
Maths or equivalent and have experience and ability to work as part of a
multidisciplinary team. Excellent interpersonal, communication and
organisation skills, the ability to organise and prioritise workload,
accuracy, willingness to learn and an awareness of confidentiality are also
essential for this role.
The post is offered on a part-time basis and is fixed term for one year,
