You will be required to work closely with other members of the networks team, both senior and junior, providing guidance to the junior members of the team, and reports and plans to senior members of the team. A key part of this senior role is working on multiple concurrent technical projects, both within IT Services, and in the wider University. These projects could last several days or several months. Prioritisation and communication are key to the success of these projects to deliver a service on time, budget and to requirements. Responsibilities 1. Planning and coordinating the specification, installation, configuration, procurement, upgrading, decommissioning and maintenance of the University's wireless network hardware/software and associated infrastructure. This includes AP’s, firewalls, switches, UPS’s, monitoring services and other associated equipment. 2. Assist the Managed Network Services Manager, Deputy Managed Network Services Manager and Wireless Specialist in the day-to-day running of the Network Helpdesk, apportioning of tasks to junior team members, and taking ownership of key technical queries from the helpdesk. 3. Deputise for the Wireless Specialist in their absence. 4. Act as a Tier 2/3 escalation point for IT Support Staff (ITSS) and the Network Technicians when technical queries and issues arise within the University. 5. Prioritise, diagnose and assign/resolve/escalate network faults, anywhere in the University according to agreed guidelines/SLAs. 6. Guide and mentor the junior Network Technicians in their development. 7. Produce and maintain documentation, including network diagrams and device configuration files, project documentation and service and user guides. 8. Consult with other teams within IT Services and the wider University to plan, schedule and prioritise network upgrades and installations, to make sure these are implemented smoothly and efficiently to avoid network downtime. 9. Keep up-to-date with new technology and trends in networking and Wi-Fi, and to find, assimilate and apply technical documentation on products, technologies and/or legislation, in a rapidly changing environment. 10. Working closely with external clients and suppliers representing Managed Network Services interests on the installation and maintenance of services and equipment provided by them. 11. Excellent understanding of 802.11 wireless standards and applying them to an enterprise environment. Reliable, numerate, methodical, meticulous, thorough and adaptable. Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work with staff at all levels in the University.
