You will be supporting a range of services including Windows & Linux systems and services, VMWare vSphere and VSAN, and a range of backup and replication services following devops approach to deployments where appropriate.  We are looking to develop our services with increased integration, making use of PowerShell and Bash to automate service provision across our ORCHID research platform, along with scalable deployment solutions for commonly used research platforms (such as R, Python, Jupyter Notebooks), as well as exploring opportunities for extending out to cloud environments.

 

The research we undertake uses healthcare data so an eye on security is a must and you will need to bring your technical expertise to advise and construct systems and services that support the academic requirement while maintaining the correct level of security and protection for our information assets.

You will be helping to manage and support these complex IT systems and helping our colleagues get the best use of the services to support world-leading research. What you would be doing You will be taking a lead role in providing and supporting computing and storage services using virtual and physical servers and will support the move into cloud based services as we seek to maximise the range of tools to support out academic research teams. Your role will encompass day-to-day work around the maintenance and management of server-based systems including patching systems and software, configuring services, managing user access and monitoring backup services as well as being involved in designing, developing and rolling out improvements to services, major upgrades and brand-new systems and services. You will also be part of the wider MSD IT and University community of IT specialists with a wealth of knowledge and experience in supporting our academic mission. We are committed to staff development and willing to support personal development of staff through conferences and training etc. The IT systems within the department support multiple research groups with a variety of data that requires careful handling to ensure compliance with GDPR regulations as well as NHS requirements. The department is responsible for a number of NHS data subsets and processing and compliance with the NHS DSP Toolkit as well as other toolkits such as Cyber Essentials is important to our continued work. Responsibilities Systems Management  Working on a number of critical infrastructure systems holding primary care data which is used by a number of research groups in the department, you will be responsible for maintaining and developing these services, which will require some out-of-hours work to minimise disruption to working hours service (this is not on-call work).  You will be working with VMWare vSphere and associated services (vCenter, VSAN, etc.) as well as Windows and Linux (Ubuntu) based OS (Operating System). Supporting the Windows Remote Desktop Services and associated technologies (Active Directory, WSUS etc), you will be providing support to end users on the use of these systems, troubleshooting issues and developing action plans to address these.  You will be supporting services such as OpenVPN and Ubuntu based SFTP and application servers that are used to provide various computation services to research staff.  You will be patching and updating systems via built in deployment tools and other technologies for example WSUS for Windows systems with attention needed on what updates to deploy at what times. IT Transformation  You will be responsible for developing automated processes for streamlining the day-to-day maintenance tasks required to support the various services.
