The Team The University of Oxford is creating a new BI Reporting Team and as head of this team you will line manage five report writers embedded in central professional services to support the development of reporting services where they are needed. You will therefore be managing the programme of work alongside the Data and Reporting leads in Estates, HR, Finance, Academic Administration, Alumni, Research, and Libraries. The Team will be based in Planning and you will report to the Head of Planning, and also during the lifetime of the DSIP, to the Director of the Data Strategy Implementation Programme. Data and Reporting Journey The University is investing in its Data Governance through the Data Strategy Implementation Programme. It is this Programme that is funding the new team in the first instance as a pilot service. The Programme is building on data governance developments made over recent years and is now aspiring to further improve the technical solutions and processes to make robust data available; to initiate cultural changes through the introduction of a community of practitioners and training provision; and to accelerate the provision of outputs through an enhanced reporting capability. The Reporting Community The new team will be bolstering an existing reporting provision based in central professional services. You will therefore work closely alongside data and reporting experts in the various services to develop, deliver and support reporting provisions. You will also work closely with DRAM (Data Reporting, Architecture and Modelling Team), based in IT services. This team plays a fundamental role in helping to shape data in robust and accessible to support reporting work. A key output of the Data Strategy is to develop a community of data users including report writers. This will be supported through the development of a hub offering opportunities for all report writers to share best practice, ask questions and support each other. You will play an important contribution to this community. Our Reporting Tools It is envisaged that the new BI Reporting Team will produce datasets and reports using Power BI which the University runs as part of its Office 365 domain. We are happy to provide training for those with a data background who do not have experience of Power BI. The central university also uses a range of other reporting tools including Tableau, Reporting Services and Splash BI. IT Services host an on-premise data warehouse built on a Microsoft SQL Server database instance. The warehouse sources data from a range of administrative systems – Student, HR, Finance, Research Services, and others – several of which are hosted on Oracle databases. SQL skills and some understanding data warehousing theories would be very useful for the role. Your Contribution You will manage your team’s contribution to the design and development of reports and work with report customers to understand the reporting requirements. You will evolve a standardised approach to requirements gathering, report design, documentation and deployment that is recognised and adopted across the University's reporting provision. About the Role

This role offers an exciting opportunity to place your stamp on BI reporting provision at the University of Oxford. You will be managing a brand-new BI Reporting Team consisting of 5 developers who will be embedded within existing reporting teams which will give you a unique chance to make a difference across our professional services eg Alumni services, Estates, Finance, Human Resources, Libraries, Research Services and Student Services.   Our primary reporting tool is Power BI, part of our Office 365 domain, operating alongside a range of other reporting tools including Tableau, Reporting Services and Splash BI.

 

Your key responsibilities will be to:

•         lead the prioritisation of report developments in consultation with the professional services reporting teams and report users.

•         manage your team’s contribution to the design and development of reports and work with report customers to understand the reporting requirements;

•         lead the development of consistent approaches and guidance to support good practice, efficiencies and an improved user experience

•         introduce technical solutions and enhanced reporting capability to accelerate the provision of outputs; and

•         initiate cultural changes by introducing a community of practitioners and training programme.
