The core purpose of the University of Oxford’s Biomedical Services (BMS) department is to provide for the care and welfare of animals in experimental research and in doing so we support the scientific community across the University.

 

We have an exciting opportunity for a Nuclear Imaging Scientist to join our Pre-clinical Imaging Facility at the Department of Biomedical Services, Radiobiology Research institute (RRI).

 

Our Pre-clinical Imaging Facility provides technical and scientific support for users of a broad range of scanning modalities including MRI, PET/SPECT/CT, luminescence and ultrasound. The work undertaken ranges from the provision of full study support for user groups, to the development of new and better technologies in order to enhance the use of pre-clinical imaging.

 

This is a full time, 2-year fixed term position.

 

This role will be an integral part of the imaging team, supporting researchers from across the university, as well as external users.

 

The post-holder will provide high level support and training for the deployment and use of imaging technologies to develop and deliver research aims and objectives, with a focus on pre-clinical imaging capabilities for PET/SPECT/CT.

 

About you

 

It is essential that you hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/D.Phil in a relevant subject, e.g. biomedical sciences, biomedical imaging, radiopharmacy and have familiarity with PET/SPECT/CT imaging techniques and equipment, as well as handling open-source radioisotopes and preparation/QC of radionuclide imaging tracers.

 

You will also have experience in maintaining and managing PET or SPECT systems, and have experience with small animal in vivo experiments.

 

Holding a Home Office PIL and having experience with multiple imaging modalities is desirable.

Overview of the role Reporting to the Pre-Clinical Imaging Lead Scientist, the post holder will be an integral part of the imaging team and will support researchers from across the University and externally. The post-holder will provide high level support and training for the deployment and use of imaging technologies to develop and deliver research aims and objectives, with a focus on pre-clinical imaging capabilities for PET/SPECT/CT. Responsibilities/duties  Management, operation, maintenance and quality control of pre-clinical PET/SPECT/CT imaging systems. This includes small scale project management, having oversight of all nuclear imaging-based projects to ensure effective delivery.  Agree clear task objectives, organise, and work in partnership with other members of the team and other scientific research facility staff, and coach members of user groups on specialist methodologies or procedures.  Adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols for multiple imaging modalities, including design of appropriate hardware to facilitate such combinations.  Test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate.  Collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters.  Use specialist scientific equipment in a laboratory environment.  Act as a source of information and advice to researchers throughout the imaging tracer development pathway (including radiolabeling, tracer QC, scanning and image analysis steps)  Represent the pre-clinical imaging facility and its user groups at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the facility or alone.  Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups  Actively play a part in the radiation protection requirements of the Department in compliance with local rules  Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in the field of nuclear imaging, as relevant to the research work undertaken in the facility.
