Department of Physiology, Anatomy & Genetics

University of Oxford

Sherrington Building, Parks Road, Oxford

Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Salary/Grade: Grade 7.  £36,024 - £44,263 per annum

Fixed Term until 28 February 2027

We seek to appoint two Postdoctoral Research Scientists to work with the Goodwin group at the Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour. The project will investigate how sex informs the relationships between transcriptomic signatures and specific anatomical, physiological, and functional properties of cells in the nervous system to understand sexual behaviour.

The successful candidate will be a motivated individual with a background in biology/neuroscience and a long-term interest in understanding the circuit basis of brain function and behaviour.

The successful candidate will use web-based software to reconstruct neuronal morphology and analyse synaptic connectivity, analyse and interpret data using data analysis tools, construct Drosophila strains, identify genetic reagents and design experiments, be actively involved with all aspects of the Goodwin group, speak and present at group lab meetings and national/international conferences and take responsibility for the day-to-day academic duties, including planning for tasks and experiments.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or be near to completing a PhD in Neuroscience, have detailed knowledge and experience in Drosophila genetics, experience in functional analyses of neural circuits, microscopy experience, experience with computer programming, good communication skills and be motivated to understand the circuit basis of brain function and behaviour.

The post is available from 1 March 2024.

The post will be based in The Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour, Tinsley Building. Mansfield Road, Oxford.

Informal inquiries may be directed to stephen.goodwin@cncb.ox.ac.uk or HR (hr@cncb.ox.ac.uk).

Closing date for applications is 31 January 2024 at 12 Noon.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, black and minority ethnic candidates who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.

We, as a Department and Community, will be considerate and welcoming of all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity. We acknowledge societal inequalities and how these impact us, and those around us, personally and professionally. – DPAG Statement of Inclusion.
