Overview Very high-quality data from new, extremely sensitive telescopes, new techniques in statistical data processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as high performance computing technology, are all coming together to open up paths of discovery in physics. Construction is starting on the Square Kilometre Array. The SKA science programme will commence in a few years see https://www.skatelescope.org/ ). We are searching for an experienced and motivated AI/ML data scientist, with expertise in Radio Astronomical imaging to join an international team working on SKAO pathfinder surveys, with a focus on LOFAR and the uGMRT, in collaboration with Durham University, Cambridge University and our Indian colleagues. The successful candidate will demonstrate awareness of key scientific questions in astronomical imaging, source classification and detection, including a very good understanding of galaxy formation. Responsibilities This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through our Occupational Health Service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work: • Conduct independent research on, and coordinate collaborative investigations into the theme of the post. • Assist in (or lead) proposals or simulations of observations relevant to the post, using existing or future planned instruments. • Participate in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. • Regularly write and contribute to research articles at an international level for peer-reviewed journals. • Present papers at national and international conferences to disseminate research findings, and represent the research group at external meetings/seminars. • The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach. This may include lecturing, small group teaching, and tutoring of undergraduates and graduate students. Prof Aris Karastergiou leads the pulsar group at Oxford Astrophysics.
