The Data-Driven Decisions Lab (3DL) at Saïd Business School is at the forefront of advancing methodologies and quantitative frameworks that bridge theoretical predictions with practical applications. Under the leadership of Agni Orfanoudaki, we are seeking a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our dynamic team and work in one or more of the following research areas: interpretable machine learning, healthcare analytics, algorithmic insurance and dynamic decision making.

 

Key responsibilities:

Additionally, you will have prior experience of contributing to publications and presentations, showcasing the capability to generate ideas for new research projects and research income, and exhibiting excellent communication skills, including writing for publication, presenting research proposals and results, and representing the research group at meetings.

Under the leadership of Agni Orfanoudaki, the lab is dedicated to developing new methodologies and quantitative frameworks that bridge the gap between theoretical predictions and practical prescriptions. The new postholder is going to join the 3DL group and get engaged in one or multiple of the following research areas: • Manage own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. • Adapt existing research methodologies and materials and develop new ones. • Prepare analytical frameworks, propose novel generalizable algorithms, and conduct computational experiments using data from a variety of sources. • Contribute ideas for new research projects. • Collaborate in the preparation of research publications. • Present papers at conferences or public meetings. • Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on methodologies or quantitative approaches of research. • Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone. • Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups. • • Interpretable Machine Learning: Development of transparent machine learning algorithms for enhanced human-algorithm engagement. Healthcare Analytics: Collaboration with medical investigators to create models for better decision-making in healthcare, focusing on quality of care, operational outcomes, and addressing fairness and equity considerations. • Algorithmic Insurance: Innovating insurance products to manage the liability and operational risk of machine learning algorithm usage, developing quantitative frameworks for risk estimation. • Dynamic Decision Making: Creating new approaches for optimizing decision-making over multiple time horizons, leveraging techniques like reinforcement learning, dynamic programming, and stochastic processes. The post holder could engage in teaching duties if desirable and is expected to provide guidance to junior members of the research group, including research assistants, PhD students, and/or project volunteers.
