The research group led the instigation and running of the Phase 1-3 trials for testing the OxfordAstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. We are passionate about the development of new and improved vaccines for paediatric and adult populations, and we aim to foster scientific excellence within a welcoming and progressive environment. Following our successful contributions to the development of vaccines against Salmonella Typhi and COVID-19, this is an exciting position for a researcher to develop and enhance their skills in translational research and have an impact on global health. They will be supported by the infrastructure and large team at OVG, which is staffed by clinicians, nurses, project managers, statisticians, postdoctoral researchers and research assistants. The role The position is to support the program of immunology within OVG with a focus on COVID vaccine trials, and other vaccine trials as necessary. This includes undertaking and developing assays for evaluation of correlate of protection of vaccine candidates in human clinical trials, with a focus on cellular immunity, analysing and presenting data, contributing to manuscripts for publication and training and supervising junior staff. In addition to clinical trials in Oxford, we have an extensive network of partnership institutions worldwide. Liaising and interacting effectively with teams at external sites to support exploratory immunology on trial samples will be an important aspect of this role. You will have good interpersonal skills and be able to interact productively and accurately with other team members. The ability to prepare data for publication including statistical analysis, ensuring the quality of scientific data and the ability to work as part of a team are essential. The research involves cellular immunology techniques carried out with human blood samples including ELISPOT, flow cytometry, ELISA, DNA extraction and sterile cell culture. OVG conducts world-leading research into new vaccines and optimising existing vaccines for children and adults. Our research has recently led to the global rollout of a ChAdOx-vectored vaccine against SARS-CoV2 which has saved millions of lives. Recently, a Marburg vaccine developed by the group was selected by the World Health Organisation and other stakeholders for inclusion in efficacy trials during the 2023 outbreak. This role is essential to deliverance of research projects involving new vaccines against emerging pathogens, with a focus on preclinical studies. You will support the research of Post-Doctoral Scientists, whilst obtaining training in working to Good Clinical and Laboratory Practice standards, HTA guidelines and MHRA regulations.

 

You will use a variety of techniques from molecular biology and cell biology to evaluate vaccine candidates pre-clinically. This will include the processing blood samples prior to immunological analysis. Training will be provided but previous experience in preclinical work and immunological techniques such as ELISA, ELISpot and flow cytometry is desirable. The role will also involve animal work and Personal Licence Training (PIL) will be provided. You will also participate in developing and establishing methodologies that will be used in pre-clinical to clinical vaccine evaluation. The ideal candidate would be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team, be proactive, participate in meetings and have excellent communication, organisational skills and attention to detail. Applicants should have a keen interest in research and be dedicated to the team’s output.

 

This position is offered full-time on a fixed-term contract initially for 12 months, with the possibility to extend provided further external funding is available.
