The role The Blavatnik School of Government is seeking to appoint an exceptional Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a new project funded by the Netherlands Court of Audit and led by Dr Thomas Elston (University of Oxford) and Dr Yuxi Zhang (University College London). The successful candidate will join an international and multidisciplinary team using advanced quantitative methods to examine the effect of the Court’s activities on the ministries and agencies of the Dutch Government, extending earlier similar work in the UK context (more information is available here). The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will have first-rate skills in econometrics, and graduate training in political science, sociology, public policy and/or management. The postholder will be based in Oxford, but occasional travel to London, The Hague, and elsewhere will also be necessary. The role would suit an early-career researcher with an outstanding training in quantitative social science and an interest in applying these techniques to novel research problems in the field of government and public policy. In particular, a track record of using advanced quantitative methods (e.g. in a PhD thesis), and either knowledge of or interest in survival analysis and multi-level modelling, are essential. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow must also have advanced proficiency in Dutch, and be comfortable working with administrative data written in Dutch and conversing with other members of the research team in both English and Dutch. Finally, they should have a keen eye for detail, be proactive about identifying and solving problems, be a clear and effective writer, and have an interest in applied/policy-relevant research. This involves smallscale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. • Adapt existing and develop new research methodologies and materials. • Prepare working theories and analyse qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining theories as appropriate. • Contribute ideas for new research projects. • Develop ideas for generating research income, and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers. • Collaborate in the preparation of research publications and book chapters. • Present papers at conferences or public meetings. • Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on methodologies or procedures. • Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone. • Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups. Selection criteria Essential selection criteria • Hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a field relevant to the project, together with relevant experience. • Advanced proficiency (at C1 level) in both spoken and written Dutch. • Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established 2 research programmes. • Ability to manage own academic research and associated activities. • Previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations. • Ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation. • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.
