The Ashmolean Museum is recruiting a Digital Curator for Early Modern European Coinage 1500-1700 to support the digitisation process underway in the Heberden Coin Room, through the application https://hcr.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/.

 

About the role

Working under the supervision of the Assistant Keeper in Medieval and Modern Coins, you will be guiding the different holdings in early modern coins of the department through the different stages of the digitisation process. This entails, variously, putting in good order the coin trays, photography and other data capture, researching the types according to the existing literature, verifying the provenances and other information, and making publishable online records of individual coins of the highest standard. For some of these activities you may be responsible for coordinating student placements/volunteers. You will also have to liaise with the donor for this post, who has a particular interest in early modern coins.

 

The position is fixed-term for six months. This is a part-time post that requires the postholder to work 18.75 hours per week.

 

About You

You will have a degree in history, archaeology, or related subjects, and have some experience in numismatics, and in using web-based applications such as https://hcr.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/.

 

You will be diligent and diplomatic and hard working.

Closing date 12.00 midday BST Friday 10 May 2024 Job description Overview of the role The objective of the role is to publish fully online as many as possible of the Ashmolean’s early modern European coins dating around 1500-1800, liaising with the Assistant Keeper, Medieval and Modern Coins, and respecting the wishes of the benefactor who is funding the post. The Heberden Coin Room has a very significant collection of coins dating ca. 1500-1800 from the British Isles and continental Europe. These coins are currently organized, to varying degrees of adequacy, in trays and cabinets in the Heberden Coin Room. Many of the coins have already been digitally photographed (‘captured’), and uploaded on the Heberden Coin Room’s web application https://hcr.ashmus.ox.ac.uk. The digital curator will drive the process whereby as many as possible of the relevant coins are properly ordered, classified, and described on the web application. Responsibilities The postholder will: • Take responsibility for driving the project to publish online the early modern European coins, ca. 1500-1800. • assess the state of organization of the coins, liaising with the Assistant Keeper, Medieval and Modern Coins. • where necessary, rearrange the collection appropriately after researching and consulting the relevant scientific literature. • add full catalogue data to the early modern European coins, ca. 1500-1800, on the web application, liaising with the Assistant Keeper, Medieval and Modern Coins. This process will involve researching the relevant scientific literature, verifying attributions and classifications, transcribing legends, and describing iconographies, heraldic devices, and similar. • liaise on a regular basis with the benefactor funding this post, keeping him informed of progress, drawing on his expertise in this area, and ensuring that he is content with the results.
