There may be occasional reading room invigilation. Responsibilities • Use of ALMA to maintain the current cataloguing levels in the Map section. • To continue upgrading the retrospective cataloguing of antiquarian maps to a level in line with modern reader expectations. • Answering map-related enquiries from Library users, both in person and remote. • To assist the Map section to pay invoices for sheet maps by processing them in the University accounting system. Map Department The Map Department is within the Department of Special Collections. The Department of Special Collections, under the overall direction of the Keeper, Chris Fletcher, is concerned with acquisition, management, and services to researchers, based on the great wealth of rare books and manuscripts in European languages ranging from early papyrus and the great masterpieces of medieval manuscripts to seventeenth-century historical documents, and the papers of literary and historical figures from the recent past and the contemporary period as well as printed books from all periods, printed ephemera, maps and music. The Map Curator, Nick Millea, manages the Map Department. The map collection is considerable, being one of the ten largest in the World. The collection includes a virtually complete representation of the publications of Ordnance Survey. They are a major national resource, one of the largest accumulations in the United Kingdom. As a library of legal deposit, the Bodleian receives all published maps and atlases of the British Isles. The principal energies of the section are devoted to cataloguing newly acquired maps, to making the whole collection available to readers, in person and online.
