The purpose of this office is to assist individual academics and clinicians in advancing their research discoveries, through appropriate translational funding steps, on a long-term trajectory towards development into new therapeutics, devices and clinical techniques. The TRO sits within the Medical Sciences Division and supports early stage translational projects with high potential for clinical and/or commercial impact, working closely with the Deputy Head of Division for Innovation, the Head of Licencing and Ventures for Life Sciences at Oxford University Innovation (OUI), the Business Partnerships Offices, Divisional Assistant Registrars and the Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence/Experts in Residence. The TRO draws on the seasoned experience of these stakeholders, coordinating collaborative efforts to grow the quantity and quality of translational research projects undertaken by researchers at Oxford. A confident self-starter, you will have a broad understanding of the research, translation and innovation processes in the biomedical and healthcare sectors. With experience in research project management and/or technology transfer, the post-holder will work under the leadership of the Head of the Translational Research Office to identify, encourage, and maintain a pipeline of biomedical translation opportunities. This will involve identifying and advising on suitable funding sources, supporting bid development to improve success rates and volume of funding, and provide project management to these milestone-driven projects. They will support the delivery of existing translational research programmes such as the Oxford Medical and Life Sciences Translation Fund (MLSTF), as well as the launch of new programmes. The successful candidates will have excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, being capable of winning the trust of academic researchers through the provision of high-quality support in a personable manner, enabling the academics to more efficiently achieve their translational goals. Responsibilities The main responsibilities of the Translational Research Manager are: • Provide long-term management of a portfolio of translational research projects, ensuring projects deliver against key milestones & anticipating the future funding opportunities. • Engage major TRO stakeholder expertise, identify distinctive opportunities for translational research collaborations and support academic staff to deliver them. • Build an excellent understanding of external resources for translational project funding from the research councils, charities, industry and commercial funders. Maintain awareness of the funder’s bid success criteria, liaise with key funder personnel and ensure feedback is understood and addressed in bid submissions. • Provide direct bid writing support to researchers for translational research awards to ensure the strongest possible cases of support are generated. Key schemes will include: MRC Confidence in Concept and the Bio-medical Catalyst Development Pathway Funding Scheme, NIHR, Wellcome and Innovate UK schemes. • Coordinate the sourcing of internal & external expertise to strengthen the design of translational projects, in particular with regard to deliverability and intellectual property approach. • Support the strategic allocation of internal funding streams for translational research e.g. Medical and Life Sciences Translational Fund and the BBSRC IAA. • Lead the creation of marketing material and the delivery of in-reach events to communicate the translational research agenda to biomedical researchers. • Build and maintain excellent working relationships with: (a) researchers to develop detailed knowledge of their research capabilities, activities and aspirations with regard to translation; (b) external funding bodies to understand their selection criteria for awards and long-term direction for travel; (c) existing and new corporate partners (working closely with the business development and partnering team). • Support the business development strategy for translational research and contribute to its execution. A scientific background in the Life Sciences or Clinical Sciences. An understanding of research, translation and innovation processes, cultures and environments, translational funding landscape, in bio-medical and healthcare sectors. Awareness of research translation pathways and the interplay of organisations along the pathway, including universities, research institutes, clinical research providers, pharma companies, spin-out companies, regulators and healthcare providers. Experience of providing project management support to individual academics. Significant project, event or relationship management experience, coordinating internal activities to meet deadlines and presentation to external audiences Experience of bid development and translational strategy design in a competitive setting, including bid writing, coordination of bid teams, costing and pricing of research proposals, finding external partners, benchmarking competitors and articulating winning propositions. A collaborative approach, with strong communication skills and ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships, both internally and externally with senior academics and sponsors. Strategic and analytical mind-set, capable of identifying competitive advantage and converting this into bid success. Self-directed and able to manage a number of complex projects in parallel.
