An exciting opportunity is available to join our team developing the next generation of space-based instruments and components for a range of missions with a wide range of international partners. 

 

The post is offered as a permanent position and includes line management responsibilities and coordination of the work of a growing team of scientists and engineers.

 

The Department of Physics is a key collaborator in many international programmes and projects to develop novel and cutting-edge instrumentation and other outputs and we require a high level, professional, programme and project management to support our academic mission. Working closely with a portfolio of external programme collaborators (including NASA, ESA, UKSA), the post holder will be responsible for delivering the strategic and operational lead on the department’s large scale technical projects and will work with many academic and technical services stakeholders to ensure timely delivery and success. 

 

Applicants should possess a degree and experience of project and financial management in a complex organisation and with external stakeholders.  Previous experience of Systems Engineering would be an advantage.  Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to liaise effectively with wide range of people within and beyond the University, including academic staff, industrial collaborators, funding agencies and all grades of technical, administrative and support staff.

A recognised authority in their field, the post holder supports programme and project management across a breadth of research groups, delegating ongoing responsibilities, contributing to the overarching vision and managing staff performance. Responsibilities • Provide overall management of Oxford Physics’ space instrumentation development programme and the Infrared Multilayer Laboratory. • Initiate and implement long-term programme management of (often interdisciplinary) research programmes • Develop and implement a common operational framework for major technical project support, including a robust system of documentation, review and sign-off, using industry norms and comprehensive quality assurance. • Ensure legal, regulatory and statutory compliance for project and programme management and product certification, as applicable • Manage substantial research resources and budgets • Act as the local expert in technical project management matters and provide professional help and guidance to others, as appropriate. • Generate research income and actively promote the research area.
