Project web site www.ox.ac.uk/ netzeroclimate.org Funding partner The funds supporting this research project are provided by VietJet Air, part of Sovico Group The role This PDRA will be working within an integrated programme of research on the economical, policy, and regulatory frameworks of aviation fuel emissions balanced by permanent geological CO2 storage. The project will assess the feasibility and potential impact of geologically balanced fuels (GBFs) as a complementary strategy to emissions reductions or more conventional Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for net zero aviation. A GBF is defined as a conventional aviation fuel whose carbon dioxide emissions are compensated for by an equivalent quantity of carbon dioxide (CO2) being captured and permanently stored in geological formations. The goal would be to develop policies and reporting standards which support gradually increasing the fraction of emissions captured and stored over time through cooperation between the aviation sector and their fuel suppliers. GBFs serve as a complement to emissions reduction efforts and could reduce the risk of relying too heavily on SAFs (which may prove extremely costly, and some of which compete with land use requirements in other sectors) or offset credits such as CORSIA Eligible Emission Units (whose effectiveness continue to be strongly questioned) for achieving net zero aviation. GBFs are distinguished from conventional fossil fuels by the confidence that the supplier has stored an appropriate amount of carbon dioxide, permanently, to fully compensate for the climate impact of the carbon dioxide generated at fuel combustion. This PDRA role would work within tasks which aim to describe the policy and business models necessary to define such a GBF product, and analyse approaches (in terms of cost effectiveness, guarantees of decarbonisation, and regulatory requirements) for GBFs market scaling, in comparison to conventional approaches for decarbonising the aviation sector. This task is largely focussed on the global context for the aviation fuel supply market, but will work with regional entities including the Victoria Institute in Vietnam to identify the extent to which individual business models and policy frameworks align with the needs of governments, airlines and fuel suppliers around the world, including for expanding markets in the Global South. The successful candidate will take responsibility over key tasks regarding the business model and policy framework analysis supporting GBF market growth, including, for example: 1) Investigating how GBFs may be incorporated into the current policy landscape, and how a more effective policy framework for GBFs could be developed. This analysis would include an assessment of the contributions and limitations of various market-based mechanisms in addressing GBF shortages, as well as a cost analysis of the identified approaches. 2) Examining the feasibility of using coordinated business models to facilitate the operationalisation of GBFs in the aviation sector, including a benefits and risks analysis for different business models to identify the most effective strategies for scaling up the use of GBFs in the aviation sector. Whilst this PDRA role will predominantly be within a work package on economic and business model/policy analysis regarding the implementation of GBFs within the aviation fuels market, the successful candidate will also be working with several other PDRAs within this project. The Role

 

An opportunity within the Environmental Change Institute as part of Oxford Net Zero: world-leading research enabling effective climate action to halt global warming.

 

The successful candidate will work with will work closely with Dr. Tom Kettlety, Dr. Emily Cox and Professor Myles Allen, across the School of Geography and the Environment as well as the Department of Earth Sciences.
