The Lecturer will join the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, where they will be a member of the Arabic, Persian and Turkish Subject Group. This two-year post constitutes a pilot programme of the Oxford Nizami Ganjavi Centre (ONGC), and the Lecturer will report to the ONGC Board and Director, whilst being supervised by Dr Emine Çakır for the compatibility of the Uzbek language programme with other language teaching in the Faculty. During the two years of this appointment Uzbek language will not be an examinable component of any course, and the role of Uzbek language teaching in degree courses at Oxford will be kept under review. Chagatai texts classes will be immediately available as an examined postgraduate option paper to students with sufficient background in any Turkic language. (a) Course development The Lecturer will contribute to the design and development of the Uzbek language syllabus and lessons according to the Faculty and University standards under the supervision of Dr Emine Çakır, and provide termly reports to the ONGC Board. (b) Teaching Under the direction of the Board of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, the Lecturer will provide up to 4 hours of teaching in every week of the University’s full term (there are three terms, and the ‘full term’ period within each term is eight weeks): • Uzbek language classes, with particular emphasis on proficiency skills (aural and written comprehension, speaking, free composition, vocabulary acquisition, grammar and translation); • specialist set texts options in Uzbek and Chagatai available to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Teaching may also include, upon invitation, contributions to existing papers, such as: • individual manuscript handling sessions with Central Asian Chagatai material in the Bodleian collections for postgraduate students; • contributions to the teaching of Ottoman language and texts in undergraduate and postgraduate papers; • participation in team-led teaching for Islamic History and Culture (compulsory paper for Prelims in Arabic, Persian, Turkish) with lectures and tutorials on pre-Soviet Central Asia. The Lecturer will be required to: • prepare their own teaching materials, and set and mark exercises and homework as appropriate; • analyse the results of marked exercises and homework to inform the content and methods of their classroom teaching; • identify individual student needs and problems, and creatively tailor teaching solutions accordingly; • (for examined papers only) write reports on students’ progress for colleges and course co-ordinators The Lecturer may also be asked to: • familiarise students with contemporary Uzbek media in various forms, both in terms of language and of subject matter; • provide support for postgraduate students in reading and translating Uzbek and Chagatai sources related to their research. (c) Examination The Lecturer will only be responsible for the examination of any Uzbek and Chagatai texts options they will offer. (Uzbek language will not be offered as an examined paper during the term of this employment.) (d) Administration and outreach The Lecturer will assist with the administration of the Uzbek language course as requested and may serve on the Language Teachers Committee.
