The Translational Research Office (TRO) are looking to recruit a Translational Partnerships Manager in Global Health at Oxford, UK. The TRO sits within the Medical Sciences Division and supports early-stage translational programmes with high potential for clinical, commercial and/or global impact in low-middle income countries. The TRO assists Oxford employed academics and clinicians in advancing their research discoveries, through appropriate translational funding steps, on a long-term trajectory towards development into new therapeutics, devices and clinical techniques.

 

The post-holder in this new role within the TRO will play a critical role in understanding and mapping translational global health efforts of Oxford academics based in Oxford and across the overseas research units. The post-holder will strategically align researchers and forge new collaborations and support their translational research programmes towards creating clinical impact. Building relationships will be key as well as establishing an excellent communication strategy to raise awareness of funding, resources, expertise, infrastructure and translational support available to the network. The post-holder is also expected to provide support in strategic capacity building through training and development. This role requires a combination of strategic vision, collaborative skills, and practical experience to foster effective partnerships that can drive meaningful progress and maximise potential to create impact in global health.

 

This is a fixed term post, initially for 24 months. The role is available as a full time post, but candidates wishing to work part-time (at least 0.6 FTE/22.5 hours per week) are welcome to apply. The team operates hybrid working with time split between the TRO Office in Boundary Brook House (currently a minimum 1 day/week on Tuesdays) and remote working. If offered on a part-time basis, the team can offer flexibility over the exact hours and days worked.

The TRO assists Oxford employed academics and clinicians in advancing their research discoveries, through appropriate translational funding steps, on a long-term trajectory towards development into new therapeutics, devices and clinical techniques. The TRO has made significant progress in further strengthening the long-term partnership between the University of Oxford and its long-established Wellcome-funded overseas research and capacity-building programmes in Southeast Asia (Mahidol Oxford Tropical Network Research Unit, MORU; Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, OUCRU). Working with the Mahidol Oxford Translational Innovation Partnership (MOTIP), the TRO has facilitated a wraparound support mechanism to accelerate the translational development of early-stage projects through to onthe-ground clinical implementation and testing/validation for a pipeline of emerging projects within the infectious and tropical diseases arena. We are now at a stage where we seek to expand and broaden this partnership model across to a wider geographical presence in southeast Asia to include sister units of MORU and OUCRU thereby increasing the network of researchers and the opportunities to collaborate across a wide breadth of tropical and infectious diseases and other LMIC diseases of high burden and priority. We also aim to maximise the awareness and utilisation of resources, expertise and knowledge across the multiple sites to maximise impact and improve resource utilisation. Responsibilities The key roles and responsibilities of the Translational Partnerships Manager – Global Health are: • To identify and build an excellent understanding of translational global health efforts of Oxford academics based in Oxford and across the overseas research units (including MORU and OUCRU). To identify gaps and evaluate current strategies in order to improve the efficiency in driving the translation of tropical and infectious disease interventions towards clinical implementation. • To identify, establish, and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (including researchers, and professional support staff), across the overseas research units and Oxford to foster collaborative efforts strategically aligned to translational research in tropical and infectious diseases affecting LMICs. • To explore and drive internal, bidirectional partnerships and linking up capacity, capabilities, and expertise between Oxford and the overseas research units (including MORU and OUCRU). Joint Program Development: Work with academics across the multiple sites to forge collaborations and co-develop translational research programs and projects that address tropical and infectious disease health challenges. • Support the strategic allocation of internal funding calls managed and administered by the TRO including the Medical and Life Sciences Translational Fund (MLSTF) and the Diagnostics in Tropical and Infectious Diseases (DiTi) Fund. To lead on full cycle delivery of the DiTi fund and to perform strategic evaluation of the funded awards within the DiTi project portfolio to support the continued translational development towards clinical implementation post DiTi award. • Provide bid writing and translational strategy design support to researchers through colleagues at the TRO for internal (MLSTF; DiTi) and larger external translational research awards to ensure the strongest possible cases of support are generated. Key external schemes will include: and the MRC Development Pathway Funding Scheme, NIHR, Wellcome and Innovate UK schemes. 2 • Support the Head of the TRO in strategic bid writing for translational funding on behalf of the Institution to Wellcome, and other funding agencies. Support the Head of the TRO in increasing the volume of funds available to Oxford researchers working in tropical and infectious diseases for global impact. To assist in end of grant reporting and metrics as per the requirements of Wellcome. • To build and continue to improve the TRO’s knowledge of the UK’s translational funding landscape and resource aligned to tropical and infectious diseases for global health challenges. To build and maintain excellent working relationships with external funding bodies (Wellcome, Gates Foundation, and others) to understand their selection criteria for awards and long-term direction for travel. • Monitoring and Evaluation: To establish metrics, key performance indicators, and systems for monitoring and evaluating the impact of partnerships and joint initiatives. • Encourage and support innovative approaches to translational research and global health solutions for tropical and infectious diseases. To develop and continuously evaluate and improve the partnerships strategies and processes across Oxford and the overseas research units for better outcomes and acceleration along the translational pathway towards clinical impact. • Communication: Internal Communication: To establish an effective communication strategy and serve as a liaison between all partnering units and internal teams to ensure clear communication and alignment. Lead the creation of marketing material and delivery of inreach events to communicate the translational research agenda to biomedical researchers working within the tropical and infectious diseases global health remit. External Communication: Promote partnership successes and initiatives through various channels, including reports, newsletters, and media. • Capacity Building: facilitate capacity-building activities for translational researchers such as training workshops, technical assistance, and knowledge exchange utilising the Experts in Residence network resource established by the TRO. Promote the sharing of best practices and innovations amongst researchers based across the multiple sites to enhance collective impact. Selection criteria The person appointed must demonstrate that they have: • • • • • Advanced degree in public health, global health, biomedical sciences, life sciences or related fields preferably at the post-graduate level or equivalent. A scientific background in the Life Sciences or Clinical Sciences. An understanding of research, translation and innovation processes, cultures and environments, translational funding landscape, in bio-medical and healthcare sectors. Awareness of research translation pathways and the interplay of organisations along the pathway, including universities, research institutes, clinical research providers, pharma companies, spin-out companies, regulators and healthcare providers. Proven experience in forging academic partnerships across multiple sites and management of partnerships in translational research settings. 3 • • • • • • • • Experience of supporting or developing translational research projects in an academic, funder or commercial setting. Significant project, event or relationship management experience, coordinating internal activities to meet deadlines and presentation to external audiences A proven collaborative approach, with strong communication skills and ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships, both internally and externally with senior academics and sponsors. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences. Ability to work effectively in diverse cultural contexts. Translational Research Office The MSD Translational Research Office provides oversight and delivery of the divisional support for translational research projects. The mission of this team is to identify new translational projects addressing unmet medical need, to drive the development of project plans and to secure additional project funding. The office works with a wide range of stakeholders across Oxford to coordinate and connect the right resources and expertise with projects. Mahidol Oxford Tropical Network Research Unit (MORU) The Mahidol Oxford Tropical Network Research Unit (MORU) is a longstanding overseas unit established by the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, the Faculty of Tropical Medicine (FTM) at Mahidol University, and the Wellcome Trust. With a primary focus on translational research (>90%), the majority of MORU's projects involve translation efforts. The Mahidol Oxford Translational Innovation Partnership (MOTIP) was established in 2018 under the TPA program by Wellcome Innovations. Oxford University Cambodia Research Unit (OUCRU) The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (MORU) is a longstanding overseas unit established by the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health, Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, and the Wellcome Trust. Functioning as a large-scale clinical and public health research unit, OUCRU has site offices in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Nepal. OUCRU’s vision is to have a local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally-driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia. Medical Sciences Division The Medical Sciences Division is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for biomedical and clinical research and teaching, and the largest academic division in the University of Oxford.
