The project is a collaboration between the data science and software engineering expertise of the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) and the policy and media expertise of the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford. The post holder will join a team with expertise spanning Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Migration Studies, and Media Studies. The team has published in top venues including EMNLP, ACL, Nature Machine Intelligence, ACM FAccT, and NeurIPs. Members of the team also regularly provides analysis for some of the world’s leading media outlets, including the New York Times, The Economist, The BBC, The Financial Times, and The Guardian. The Seeing Migration Narratives Project is a collaboration between the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) and the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS), both at the University of Oxford, with our nonprofit partner, IMIX. We aim to use novel computer science approaches to identify and measure migration narratives in media and social media and to create interactive data visualisations of migration narratives in the UK public debate—from media content, social media posts, and policy materials. The post holder will be reporting to the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators. The post holder will be expected to work with the project team and nonprofit practitioner stakeholders to author academic publications, design and implement a data collection and processing pipeline, and create an interactive web application. The project will be able to support relocation expenses as well as attendance at international conferences. Responsibilities • • • • • Manage own academic research and administrative activities within the project scope. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines, conduct original academic research, and co-author articles as part of an interdisciplinary team Adapt existing and develop new research methodologies using NLP with a focus on LLMs; perform ad-hoc data analysis and method evaluations Design and implement a data collection and processing pipeline for traditional media, social media and policy data.
