Patients and the Public are at the heart of medical education and have a key role to play in the whole educational process. The role is split between a clinical co-lead and a patient/public co-lead who work in tandem to fulfil the responsibilities of the post. The patient/public post holder will work with the clinical co-lead to further develop and implement the Patient and Public Involvement strategy across the 6-year undergraduate Medicine programme and the 4-year Graduate Entry Medicine programme reporting to the Directors of Studies in the medical school and also with the individual Departments that contribute to the delivery of the course. Given the ambition of the PPI strategy, the coleads need to choose the focus of their activities in order to maximise their effectiveness. Over time, the co-leads aim to be working with clinical colleagues who lead on different sections of the course to ensure that the whole curriculum involves patients in its planning and/or delivery. At the moment, the PPI co-leads represent the interest of patients in medical school discussions, and promote patient involvement and its potential in individual sections of the entire course. The aim is that ultimately, patients involved in medical education would have a sustainable patient-led group where patient educators train and support newcomers and represent patients in the governance of the medical school as a whole. The patient/public co-lead role will involve contact with patients and members of the public in healthcare settings, and at times they will not be under the direct supervision of a healthcare professional. An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is therefore required. Responsibilities/duties All of the following will be carried out together with the clinical co-lead and the role includes sharing administrative duties such as organising meetings, corresponding with and supporting the patient group as a whole.  Work with the Directors of Studies and individual course leads to support the growth of patient involvement in admission to medical school, curriculum development, teaching, assessment, and school governance, resulting in a sustainable programme which has the needs of patients at the heart of medical education in Oxford.  Develop and implement effective processes, policies and procedures for recruiting and supporting patients and the public as educators including selection, remuneration, welfare, and advocacy for patient tutors. The role also involves contributing towards the development of a centrally-held register of expert patients willing to contribute to medical educational activities.  Develop resources and training materials to support new patient educators and lay members to contribute effectively and in a supported way to the medical school, facilitating networking and interaction between expert patients.  Review and update the School’s externally facing material (primarily online information) regarding Patient and Public Involvement in medical education.  Review existing committee structures of the school and ensure opportunities are created for patient and public representation, supporting recruitment to those committees, and ensuring best practice is adhered to.  Provide an annual report to the committees of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.  Contribute to the annual GMC self-assessment activities by providing relevant and timely updates on the development of PPI work within the School.  Promote patient involvement to medical students, encouraging and supporting them with patient-involvement projects. Selection criteria Essential  A demonstrable interest in undergraduate medical education  Experience of the NHS and healthcare, gained either from personal experience or in a professional capacity  Experience of involvement with patients and/or users and/or carers and/or members of the public.
