We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the Machine Learning Research Group at the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford).  The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust and is fixed-term for three years.

This research position aims to develop machine learning algorithms to enable learning human ethical values from survey data. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to an interdisciplinary research programme, requiring close collaboration with researchers from philosophy and bioethics. The required algorithms must ideally be methodologically novel, adhere to best practices, and be applicable to large-scale survey results. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of machine learning, ethics, and social science, focusing on inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) techniques.

You should have a relevant PhD/DPhil (or be near completion), together with research experience in inverse reinforcement learning (or related machine learning techniques for learning preferences from data) and have proven experience with relevant software engineering projects.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to either Steve Roberts (sjrob@robots.ox.ac.uk) or Mike Osborne (mosb@robots.ox.ac.uk).

For more information about working at the Department, see www.eng.ox.ac.uk/about/work-with-us/

Only online applications received before midday on the 5th November 2024 can be considered. You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
