The role
The post holder will join a large group of researchers at the Oxford Vaccine Group, conducting
major national and international studies of vaccines for children and adults.
We seek a self-motived medical statistician to join our large team of bioinformaticians,
epidemiologists and statisticians and to work on clinical observational studies and
national/international clinical trials of vaccines and infectious diseases.
You will have excellent communication skills and a commitment to producing accurate and
appropriate analyses in a timely fashion. Strong analytical skills, an enquiring and flexible attitude,
and an interest in working collaboratively with researchers from different disciplines will also be
important components for success.
It is desirable that candidates have a PhD in a relevant discipline. However, candidates with
relevant experience but no PhD are encouraged to apply also. Candidates who perform well in
the post can complete a PhD within the department as part of their role, with an 80% reduction in
fees subject to departmental approval.
Flexible working
The postholder will be based at the Oxford Vaccine Group, CCVTM, Churchill Hospital, Oxford,
however, partial hybrid working may be possible. The post is offered as full-time, but part-time
and flexible working arrangements may be considered with a minimum of 22.5 weekly hours.
Responsibilities
•
Provide statistical advice and explanations of statistical issues within a multi-disciplinary
team including: clinical scientists, trial managers, data managers, microbiologists and
other researchers.
•
Contribute to the preparation of new clinical research proposals, such as sample size
calculation and validation.
•
Contribute to protocol development and ethics committee submissions.
•
Contribute to the statistical review of all Case Report Forms and other data collection tools
required.
•
Generate and validate randomisation schedules as required.
•
Contribute to the management of study databases, such as checking, validation and
cleaning data to remove inaccuracies or errors.
•
Develop and review statistical analysis plans (SAP).
•
Take the lead on all the detailed analyses relating to your assigned studies.
•
Contribute to the dissemination of research findings via peer reviewed publications.
•
Present work at regional, national or international scientific meetings.
•
Commitment to training and developing new skills and methods where needed.
•
Develop methodological research in collaboration with members of OVG or external
collaborators.
Participate in the wider work of the Oxford Vaccine Group, such as journal clubs, and
weekly meetings.

Hold a post-graduate qualification in statistics/epidemiology or a relevant field, or
substantial relevant experience.
Experience of analysing large datasets from clinical trials or other well-designed studies
to address clinically relevant health-related questions.
Demonstrated ability to write programs in at least one statistical software such as Stata,
SAS, or R.
Experience of writing up statistical analysis plan (SAP) for clinical trials.
Experience of writing up results of statistical analyses and contributing to peer-reviewed
papers.
Demonstrated ability to work successfully with individuals from different disciplines.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate
statistical concepts clearly to a non-statistical audience.

The Oxford Vaccine Group
The Oxford Vaccine Group (OVG) is led by Andrew J Pollard, Professor of Paediatric Infection
and Immunity. Staff re based within a purpose-built centre on the Churchill Hospital site and form
part of the Centre for Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine (CCVTM). The aim of OVG is
to co-ordinate expertise in the study of microbial diseases and the immune response to microbes,
in order to facilitate research on the development and implementation of vaccines. This may

include new, improved or combined vaccines for the adult and paediatric population. There is
currently a large focus on delivering the COVID-19 vaccine trials.
Core group members include two Consultants in Vaccinology, a Director of Clinical Trials, a
Senior Clinical Trials Manager, adult and paediatric clinical research fellows, adult and paediatric
research nurses, project managers, QA manager, IT manager, and an administration team. The
Infection and Immunity Laboratory includes post doctorate scientists, research assistants and
DPhil students. Wider group members include professionals from a range of specialities including
immunologists, microbiologists, statisticians, a community paediatrician, the local Health
Protection team and a bioethicist.
