The role The Biology IT team provides a wide range of computing and network support, delivering and supporting IT equipment, specialist software, services and networking supporting in support of the teaching and research activities of the Department. Reporting to the IT Manager, you will help provide excellent support to academic, research, student and administrative users of IT. A key aspect of the role is staffing the service desk, our users’ primary point of contact with the IT Team, ensuring that through good communication, effective processes, procedures, and excellent documentation we help the Department get the best value from our IT. You will be primarily providing support to the staff, researchers and students in our buildings in the centre of Oxford. Although the role is based in the city, there may be an occasional requirement to provide support to one or more of our satellite sites. Responsibilities  Confidently advise staff and students, using appropriate methods of communication tailored to the audience answering straightforward questions or IT solutions, interpreting guidance to answer more complex questions, or redirecting as appropriate.  Provide first line support for the Department including working with IT hardware, software, telephone, Audio-Visual support, computer and printer management and user accounts. Responding promptly to tickets as they come in and ensuring excellent customer service provision.  Contribute to project work independently or collectively as required.  Implement University IT policies and procedures, providing data by running ad hoc reports from appropriate IT systems (e.g. ticketing system).  Prepare standard purchase requisitions for new equipment, most typically PCs, laptops, Macs and IT accessories.  Planning and carrying out IT inductions for new staff.  Ensure full compliance with GDPR and Information Security policies and promote awareness of phishing attempts.  Assist with the provision of IT support related to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.  Assist in the timely creation and maintenance of quality documentation for both users and IT colleagues, helping users make the most of IT services.  Attend appropriate training.  Flexibility will be as required to undertake the role, including the scheduling and attendance of works outside normal working hours.  Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grading of the post.  Embed the principles of mutual respect, equality, diversity, inclusivity and sustainability in all aspects of your work; undertake training as and when asked to do so. The Department established from August 2022 as a result of a merger between the Departments of Zoology and Plant Sciences, and is preparing to move into the new state-of-the-art Life and Mind Building in 2025. The Department of Biology is recognised internationally for its research in a wide range of fields spanning all levels from molecules to ecosystems, and tackling global challenges through fundamental bioscience research. Over time, the research interests of the Department has been focused on five primary themes: Behaviour & Biomechanics; Ecology & Conservation; Evolutionary Biology; Microbiology & Infectious Disease; and Molecular Plant Biology. Research is conducted in all spheres from laboratory and in silico analysis to theoretical and field-based research.
