"""Job Description DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY Summary Job title Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational and Experimental Mechanistic Studies of Organometallic Catalysis Division Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Department Department of Chemistry Location Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, South Parks Road, OX1 3QR Grade and salary Grade 7: £38,674 - £46,913 per annum (inclusive of Oxford University Weighting) Hours Full time Contract type Fixed-term for a period of up to 36 months Reporting to Professor Michael Neidig Vacancy reference 176842 Additional information Post is available from 1 July 2025 Research topic Iron-catalysed C-C and C-heteroatom bond formation Principal Investigator / supervisor Professor Michael Neidig Project web site https://www.chem.ox.ac.uk/people/michael-neidig Funding partner The funds supporting this research project are provided by the EPSRC The role Research in the Neidig group is focused on unleashing the untapped potential of iron catalysis in organic synthesis through the development of unprecedented insight into active catalyst structure, ligand effects and mechanism in iron-catalysed organic transformations. In turn, such foundational insight will provide the basis to inspire and facilitate necessary improvements in current iron catalytic systems to not only make them competitive with existing precious metal systems, but also to enable the development of bespoke ligands and iron catalysts that will greatly expand the scope and utility of iron catalysts in organic synthesis. The successful candidate will work in the area of iron-catalysed organic transformations such as C-C and C-heteroatom bond forming reactions which offer more sustainable routes for complex chemical synthesis. However, current iron-based methods are not competitive with precious metal catalysis (Pd, Ir, Rh etc.), and the development of iron catalysts and methods with improved performance are required for practical applications, particularly in industry. The primary goal will be to address this challenge using a mechanism-driven approach to catalyst and method development which directly pairs computational studies of reaction intermediates and pathways with experimental spectroscopic and synthetic studies to synergistically inform the development of new iron (pre)catalysts for applications in chemical synthesis. They work closely with other team members on iron catalysis as well as external collaborators focused on organic methods development with iron. Responsibilities 1. Manage own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines 2. Adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols 3. Test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate 4. Contribute ideas for new research projects 5. Develop ideas for generating research income, and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers 6. Undertake comprehensive and systematic literature reviews and write up the results for publication in peer-reviewed journals 7. Collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters 8. Use specialist scientific equipment in a laboratory environment 9. Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and experimental techniques 10. Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone 11. Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups 12. Actively participate in journal club meetings 13. PDRAs may be required to teach, this may include lecturing, small-group teaching, and tutoring of undergraduates and graduate students. 176842 Job Description and Selection Criteria.docx 2 Selection criteria Essential selection criteria 1. Publications: Be able to demonstrate competence and success in the thesis research area (and postdoctoral work if appropriate), e.g. as judged by publications (or papers in press) in high quality peer reviewed journals.
