We seek a self-motived data scientist/bioinformatician, to join our team of clinicians, vaccinologists, bioinformaticians, and statisticians. The post holder will be focus on delivering metagenomic analysis of the human microbiome and resistome, and how this is impacted by different duration and classes of antibiotics. The aim of this research is to inform clinicians of the most appropriate patient-centric antibiotic course while promoting antibiotic stewardship and combatting the global health threat of antimicrobial resistance. You will have an excellent knowledge of the gut microbiome and an excellent understanding of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. You will have prior experience in with metagenomic sequencing and bioinformatics. The incumbent will conduct metagenomic research and support bioinformatics activities within the wider group. This post requires excellent communication skills and a commitment to writing high quality manuscripts that present important scientific findings with clarity. Strong analytical skills, an enquiring and flexible attitude, and an interest in working collaboratively with researchers from different disciplines will also be important components for success. Responsibilities • Use suitable methodologies for metagenomic analysis of human intestinal microbiota in collaboration with members of the research team. • • Identifying antibiotic resistance genotypes from metagenomic data. Manage databases with large datasets including next-gen and third generation sequencing data. Supervision and training of PhD students in bioinformatics and computational biology analysis, as well as statistical concepts of big data analysis. Identify and troubleshoot technical (computational/statistical) or scientific problems. Contribute to discussions planning the overall aims and objectives of the Systems Vaccinology/Systems Biology group at OVG. You will play an important role in contributing to our efforts to understand the human microbiome and how this is impacted by antibiotic treatment. A side effect of antimicrobial treatment targeted at harmful bacteria, is the disruption of the “healthy” bacteria — leading to a rise in antimicrobial-resistant genes and providing a niche for harmful bacteria. The goal of this research is to optimise the appropriate use of antibiotic treatment strategies to effectively treat infections while avoiding the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

About you

You will hold (or close to completion) a PhD/DPhil in Bioinformatics, Statistics, Mathematics, or microbiology with proven and demonstrable analytical skills, including in the analysis of metagenomic data. You will have highly effective verbal and written communication skills with all levels of staff and an ability to operate effectively in a demanding and collaborative research environment.
