The role This is an exciting opportunity to develop statistical methods for novel trial designs in Musculoskeletal Sciences (especially rheumatology and experimental medicines) with funding for a fully funded DPhil. You will be supervised by • • • Laura Coates, NIHR research professor in rheumatology, University of Oxford Jonathan Cook, Professor of Clinical Trials and Medical Statistics, University of Oxford James Wason, NIHR research professor and Professor of Biostatistics, University of Newcastle You will work independently, with guidance from the supervision team as needed to design and conduct collaborative methodological research projects with an applied statistical focus. The related research will contribute and inform the planning, design and analysis of a new NIHR-funded National platform study in inflammatory arthritis called MONITOR2. Existing data (e.g. from the MONITOR study (running 2018-2024) will be used to model statistical aspects of the future study design. This will consider different combinations of data including patient-reported outcomes, clinician assessments, laboratory results and novel digital outcomes. It will also consider how to account for variable follow up within new NHS practices. It is anticipated the work will involve a literature review of relevant statistical methods, simulation studies of the use of various statistical methods, and statistical modelling (using multiple specific longitudinal models) to assess patient outcomes over time under various scenarios. There is also potential to use data from the HIPPOCRATES prospective observational study (HPOS) to look at prediction models for the development of PsA. You will be part of a team contributing to methodology research projects being undertaken within the unit. Your line manager may assign other tasks commensurate with the position. The post holder will also contribute to the design, conduct, analysis and presentation of results of clinical research projects, across the different units within CSM/OCTRU as appropriate. Such projects involve interacting directly with researchers, helping to ensure the completion and delivery of projects within deadlines and contributing to maintaining the projects’ scientific quality and integrity. Responsibilities Your responsibilities (under the supervision of the team above), will include, but not limited to the following: • Conduct methodological projects that address a practical and statistical issue related to clinical research projects. For example, conducting statistical modelling using the MONITOR study data to address the use of remote outcome measures and the impact of variable follow-up times introduced by current NHS outpatient service redesign. • Provide expert input on the statistical aspects of the design and set-up of the MONITOR2 study and other relevant studies, working within a multidisciplinary team • Prepare statistical analysis plans (SAP) for analyses to be conducted which may also require leading on drafting the related publication. • Produce statistical programs for analysis of study data and related methodological research as appropriate to the research • Take full responsibility for the integrity of the data and the conduct of the statistical analyses • Contribute to and produce project reports for internal and external group/project meetings • Disseminate research findings via writing peer reviewed publications and giving presentations at investigator meetings and national/international meetings or making a substantial contribution to them • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures where relevant (e.g. OCTRU’s for clinical trials) • Provide expert support and advice to the research team on the statistical aspects of the design, analysis and reporting of clinical research studies. • Attend and occasionally contribute to CSM/OCTRU activities such as seminars, conferences, workshops and other events • Provide mentorship and/or project management for more junior members of staff • Contribute to methodology research projects 37. You will also contribute to the design, conduct, analysis and presentation of results of clinical research projects, across the different units within the Centre for Statistics in Medicine (CSM)/ Oxford Clinical Trials Research Unit (OCTRU), as appropriate. Additionally, you will provide expert input on the statistical aspects of the design and set-up of the MONITOR2 study and other relevant studies, working within a multidisciplinary team. As part of your role, you will prepare statistical analysis plans (SAP) for analyses to be conducted which may also require leading on drafting the related publication.

 

You must hold a postgraduate degree in statistics (or a closely related subject), a substantial part of which relates to medical statistics, or equivalent experience. You will have experience of working as a statistician conducing statistical analyses contributing to research outputs. Additionally, you should be fluent in key aspects of study design and analysis, and aware of the latest statistical techniques. Proficiency in using statistical software, including at least one of Stata or R for complex analyses requiring statistical programming is essential. Experience contributing to peer-review publications, particularly quantitative methodological projects, is desirable.

 

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 3 years.

 

A lower grade offer may be considered (Grade 6: £34,982 - £40,855 per annum) depending on experience, with commensurate reduction in responsibilities if a suitable candidate cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position.
