The post will cover the duties of the Stanley Ho Professor in Chinese History, Henrietta Harrison, whilst she undertakes the role of Faculty Board Chair during 2025-28 and takes sabbatical leave the following year. Responsibilities Teaching – approximately 10 hours per week of contact time during term: • For master’s students, contribute lectures, classes and essay review sessions on modern Chinese history to courses on Contemporary China, Modern Chinese Studies, and Global and Imperial History. • For undergraduate students, contribute lectures, tutorials and classes on modern Chinese history for core papers; and either the option on China’s engagement with the world since the 18th century, or another option, on a broad theme in modern Chinese history, covering Chinese textbased classes and some contemporary China content. Essential selection criteria Candidates must: • Have completed, or be very close to completing, a doctorate in Chinese history by 1 September 2025. • Have an aptitude for academic teaching at undergraduate and post-graduate level. • Possess a solid knowledge of the Chinese language. • Be able to give lectures, tutorials and classes using original Chinese texts on various aspects of modern Chinese history and an option including some contemporary China content. • Be able to supervise undergraduate and masters students on topics in modern Chinese history and society. • Be able to demonstrate a commitment to communicating and publishing research in their field of study. • Possess excellent communication skills, supported by a good standard of English. • Demonstrate the willingness and the organisational and inter-personal skills needed for effective administration.
