The role This is an exciting opportunity to join the Blavatnik School of Government’s IT team in our stunning building in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter. The candidate will provide essential support for computing services and infrastructure, ensuring continuity in the department’s teaching and research activities during this period. The IT Manager works under the direction and supervision of the Head of IT and AV and is pivotal to the smooth running of computing services and infrastructure in support of the department’s teaching and research activities. As a senior IT team member, the post holder will be expected to organise their own time appropriately to effectively provide the day-to-day support as well as progress longer term projects to meet deadlines and maintain agreed service levels. They must understand departmental IT strategy and policy and will be expected to proactively contribute to the creation and evolution of them. Reflecting the nature and demands of a busy IT department, the normal working pattern will be by agreement within an 8am – 6pm working window. The post holder will be expected to show flexibility and support occasional planned out-of-hours working to support IT change and other operational School needs by agreement with the Head of IT and AV. From time-to-time, the post holder may be expected to support short-term out-of-hours work when responding to emergency changes or major IT incidents. Responsibilities Technical support and systems administration • • • • • • Assist in the administration of Windows Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP. Support the maintenance, documentation, and administration of the VMware environment, including host server and storage infrastructure, ensuring security and best practices are upheld. Provide assistance in managing the papercut printing service, including setup and configuration. Build and configure new computers to agreed departmental standards, integrate devices to the network, and support patching and MAC address management. Assist in monitoring network systems, including routers, switches, and firewalls, ensuring operational efficiency. Support wireless network incident resolution and act as a point of escalation for network and wireless issues. Project and infrastructure support • • • Assist in planning and supporting technical projects as required. Provide input on system maintenance and security best practices. Carry out technical appraisals of system requirements, supporting procurement processes where necessary. Service desk support • • • • Assist in managing high-profile critical or complex incidents and provide updates to management and customers when necessary. Provide communications between the IT Department and customers during incidents, planned outages, and upgrades. Support on-site technical investigation of issues and escalate problems when necessary to ensure timely resolution within SLA timeframes. Contribute to continuous service improvement by identifying issues, investigating them, and assisting in finding resolutions. In-depth knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, and VMware. Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking, Wi-Fi, VLANs, and network security best practices. Experience supporting desktop operating systems (Windows and Mac) and implementing security measures. Ability to manage a varied workload, work independently, and collaborate effectively within a team. Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users. Experience in supervising or providing guidance to junior team members. Desirable selection criteria • • • • Experience working in a similar role within a Higher Education Institute. Experience with Juniper Mist or similar network technologies. Experience with network access control systems such as ClearPass. Familiarity with MDM systems such as JAMF.
