**About the Department**
The Network and Data Centre Operations team is responsible for managing the
University of Oxford’s extensive network infrastructure and shared data
centres. This includes ensuring the smooth operation of over 400km of
underground fibre optic and copper cabling, supporting critical research,
teaching, and administrative services across the University. Our team plays a
vital role in maintaining the University's highly available and resilient
network, working with enterprise-grade networking hardware and data centre
facilities to provide robust and secure connectivity. We collaborate closely
with internal IT teams, colleges, departments, and external service providers
to deliver a reliable and scalable network infrastructure that underpins the
University’s world-class research and academic activities.

**About the Role**
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Data Centre and Network
Operations Technician to join us on a permanent basis. **Please note-** Due to
the hands-on nature of this role and the need to access physical
infrastructure, the postholder will be required to work primarily on-site at
the University’s data centres and network locations. However, we are committed
to supporting flexibility where possible, and some administrative tasks may be
completed remotely by agreement.
As part of a highly skilled team, you will play a crucial role in supporting
and maintaining the University’s extensive network infrastructure, including
over 400km of underground fibre optic and copper cabling. You will be
responsible for the installation, configuration, management, and maintenance
of key network hardware, such as switches, wireless access points, VoIP
devices, and monitoring tools. You will also support the operation of the
University’s shared data centres, ensuring their power, cooling, and security
systems function effectively.
In this role, you will work closely with IT teams across the University, as
well as external suppliers and contractors, to diagnose and resolve network
faults, manage data centre infrastructure, and support IT staff with equipment
installation and maintenance. You will also provide guidance and mentorship to
junior team members and contribute to the continuous improvement of network
and data centre services.

We are looking for a proactive and reliable individual with:
* Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) to automate routine network and data centre tasks.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
* Excellent problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to work independently and escalate issues when needed.
* Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining network hardware and infrastructure.
* A methodical and meticulous approach to maintaining network and data centre operations.
* A good standard of education (minimum A-level or equivalent).
