The role

An exciting opportunity to join the Laboratory Technician team as the Senior Laboratory Manager in the new Life and Mind Building (LaMB), Biology Department, is available immediately. Reporting to the Deputy Head of Administration you will manage the day-to-day laboratory coordination for the building, ensuring effective delivery of research while maintaining laboratory space and assets. The role involves laboratory coordination, health and safety, equipment and asset management as well as team management.

 

About you

You will have experience managing a technical environment or team and have proven problem solving and leadership skills. You will have an in-depth knowledge of health and safety requirements within a technical environment with experience writing Risk Assessments and SOPs. You will have the ability to perform, demonstrate and teach the safe use of equipment.

Reporting to the Deputy Head of Administration you will manage the day-to-day laboratory coordination for the building, ensuring effective delivery of research while maintaining laboratory space and assets. Responsibilities Laboratory Coordination • • • Lead day-to-day laboratory coordination, ensuring effective delivery of research. Plan and coordinate new laboratory space and desk space effectively with research group heads and section leads, Deputy Head of Administration, Building and Facilities Managers, and the lab management team. Be the first point of contact for the Building and Facilities Management Team concerning laboratory maintenance, access, movement of equipment/people/chemicals between laboratories, processes, and any changes that need to happen within the building. Health and Safety • Advise, review, and supervise team members in writing up-to-date H&S paperwork such as SOPs, COSHH, and Risk Assessments for team activities in the labs. • Administrate relevant licenses obtained for research (such as GMO) and ensure compliance with relevant statutory UK/EU legislation relating to health and safety and materials (such as the Nagoya Protocol). • Oversee the importing and exporting of dangerous goods and ensure IATA’s Dangerous Goods Regulations are followed. Be responsible for the safe disposal of hazardous waste that cannot be disposed of in the normal waste streams. Actively participate in regular audits of the laboratory with H&S and the Building and Facilities Management Team. Facilitate laboratory inductions for new staff and be the point of contact on protocols, Health and Safety procedures, and documents. Ensure all individuals are trained on equipment they wish to use. Support the supervisor in arranging training for specialist equipment as required. Support academics in keeping accurate laboratory training and H&S records for all users. • • • • • Equipment and Asset Management • • • • • Responsible for, and authority to procure equipment and consumables as required in the laboratory in line with Finance policy and budgetary constraints. Oversee the placing of orders and review orders placed by the group in a timely fashion, keeping all the necessary records. Oversee all routine maintenance/cleaning and repair work of lab equipment including annual defrost of ULT, Freezers, Fridges; cleaning of MSC/Fume hoods; ultra centrifuges/centrifuges, etc. Ensure all equipment is asset tagged, inventoried, regularly audited, and the asset register is kept up to date with any new equipment brought into the lab or equipment sent for disposal. Supervise team members in maintaining and tracking laboratory assets. Team Management • • • Line manage a team comprising laboratory managers, assistant laboratory managers, and laboratory technicians. Run team meetings and one-on-one sessions to support the overall team. Conduct yearly PDR reviews and facilitate and/or deliver appropriate training workshops for the team when required. Be a part of the LaMB Management Group and represent the Core technician team. Additional Responsibilities • • • Be an advocate and support the University, Technicians Commitment Action plan. Make informed decisions on new equipment selection and be the point-of-contact for company representatives coming to service or install equipment, ensuring that the laboratories are prepared and the Building and Facilities Team are informed of any specific requirements in advance Participate in the out-of-hour rota. Selection criteria Essential selection criteria • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Educated to degree standard, or equivalent combination of training and experience in a scientific subject. Knowledge of, or demonstrable interest in, appropriate academic discipline, its context and wider academic relationships. Ability to perform, demonstrate, and teach the safe use of equipment. Ability to communicate effectively in all formats with a wide range of people including internal and external stakeholders. Excellent time management, organisational and planning skills. Able to manage own workload, work to strict deadlines and remain calm under pressure. Ability to create and maintain accurate and detailed records and present information to senior management. Excellent IT user. Able to use technology to optimise and streamline work processes using an array of Office 365 applications. In-depth knowledge of health and safety requirements for a technical environment, and the ability to write Risk Assessments and SOPs. Experience of managing a technical environment or team. Experience in carrying out technical procedures without supervision. Experience of producing reports and management information/data and presenting information at key stakeholder/senior management meetings. Evidence of ongoing professional development and relevant professional qualifications. An understanding of a project life cycle and how to deliver it. Supervisory experience in a health and safety role (including military experience) such as Biological Safety Officer, RPS, Person in Charge. Experience in the management of budgets, and a knowledge of finance management software. Experience with embedding the use of Laboratory Management Software or databases into daily practices. Experience of working in an ethics or safety-based role in a research environment. Ability to manage difficult conversations/scenarios tactfully and effectively. The Department established from August 2022 as a result of a merger between the Departments of Zoology and Plant Sciences, and is preparing to move into the new state-of-the-art Life and Mind Building in 2025. The Department of Biology is recognised internationally for its research in a wide range of fields spanning all levels from molecules to ecosystems, and tackling global challenges through fundamental bioscience research. Over time, the research interests of the Department has been focused on five primary themes: Behaviour & Biomechanics; Ecology & Conservation; Evolutionary Biology; Microbiology & Infectious Disease; and Molecular Plant Biology. Research is conducted in all spheres from laboratory and in silico analysis to theoretical and field-based research. At all times we seek to reinforce the connections between research and our education offering, at both graduate and undergraduate level. The Department teaches a four-year undergraduate degree MBiol course in Biology, with fourth-year students undertaking a Masters-level research project. It also supports a variety of graduate placements and hosts the University’s DPhil in Biology. External research income to the Department is derived from over 50 different funding agencies, with the principal current funders being the European Research Council, the Royal Society, the Wellcome Trust, BBSRC and NERC.
