About the Role

In this role you will be supporting academic departments and faculty by identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gifts to support our priorities, which include student support and academic posts and research.

 

Working closely with academic colleagues, you will be able to clearly communicate complex ideas to potential donors that align with the University’s strategic goals.  You will manage a portfolio of £100k-£1m gifts, raising around £1m each year. Using your ability to maintain a large network of relationships, you will spend the majority of your time facilitating new gifts and provide stewarding for long-standing philanthropic relationships.

 

To Be Successful You’ll Need:

The successful candidate will be an experienced fundraising professional with a strong track record and a confident approach to achieving ambitious income targets. You will be an excellent communicator who possesses diplomacy and creativity, as well as the ability to operate in a large, complex institution with multiple stakeholders.

Due to the nature of its work, DAE collaborates closely with a number of other units and teams, particularly Public Affairs, Finance, Research and Legal. In 2019, the University and the colleges completed the Oxford Thinking Campaign, which raised £3.34bn, and is the most successful higher education fundraising campaign in Europe. The University is currently planning its next major campaign and, as a member of DAE, the post holder will have a key role to play in helping realise its successful delivery. Purpose To meet the objectives outlined below and other key strategic priorities as identified by the University. To develop and implement plans to maximise philanthropic support for agreed priorities within the Social Sciences Division Oxford is a world-leader in Social Sciences scholarship, recognised internationally for the outstanding quality and depth of its teaching and research. The Division typically secures £30-£40m in philanthropic funds each year across its 15 Departments, working closely with academic champions and the Head of Division. This is an exciting time to join the fundraising team, as we are growing due to demand from both Departments and donor interest in the research and teaching across the Division. This is a key role within the team and the post holder will have the opportunity to work with donors and academics at the highest level. Priorities for fundraising include securing support for graduate scholarship and for academic posts and research. Fundraising at Oxford is well established and this role has the scope to work across a number of important and high profile projects. The post holder will contribute to approaches to high level donors and will also manage their own donor portfolio. When working in Oxford, the post holder will be based in central Oxford working with the Division and with the Development Office where there will be support services provided (accounting, database, proposal writing and research). The post holder will be expected to liaise with senior academics to shape fundraising propositions and to spend the greater part of their time identifying and meeting current or prospective donors both in the United Kingdom and internationally. As a core element of activity, the post holder will be expected to work closely with other development professionals of the Collegiate University. The post holder will manage a portfolio of 75-100 major gifts prospects. The post holder will be responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of potential donors able to support the Social Sciences at Oxford, typically in the range of £100,000-£1,000,000 over time. The post holder will be expected to lead and coordinate a number of donor relationships and, within the Social Sciences team, work across a number of relationships to maximise their engagement on behalf of the Social Sciences. In common with the rest of the University, the Social Sciences development programme will make reference to a number of regional strategies. Responsibilities The duties of the post are set out as they are envisaged at present, but it will be important for the person appointed to be versatile and adaptable, and able to contribute to the development of the fundraising and alumni engagement functions of the collegiate University. The main duties of this post will be as follows: • To play a crucial role in ensuring that philanthropic income against the core priorities of the Social Sciences Division in a steady and sustainable manner year on year through the successful acquisition of new funds raised • To implement solicitation strategies to secure gift support. The post holder will be expected to encourage prospective donors to consider making a gift to the University and, when appropriate, personally to solicit a specific sum of money often working jointly with a senior academic. This will require close consultation with the Head of Development – Social Sciences and will require the post holder to work effectively with academic champions and volunteers • To identify prospective donors with whom the University will aim to develop significant philanthropic relationships and eventually build a prospect pool of 75-100 quality major gift prospects. These will be drawn from several groups: high net-worth individuals (both alumni and non-alumni), the corporate sector, trusts and foundations and other bodies from whom funding may be obtained. To achieve personal income 4 targets of at least £1million annually and achieve performance expectations of approximately 15 prospect meetings per month • To be responsible for formulating and implementing stewardship strategies for all donors for whom the post holder is the primary relationship manager • To be able to understand academically complex projects and explain and promote them to potential, nonspecialist donors. This will involve working out how to articulate and publicise priority projects, as agreed by the University and Social Sciences Division, in both written and verbal form. This will be undertaken in close collaboration with the Head of Development – Social Sciences and senior University officials and academics, and with senior fundraising personnel in the Collegiate University both in Oxford and overseas (including the offices located in New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo) • To understand donors’ wishes and aspirations and to identify potential links with key priority projects with the aim of securing a major gift • To participate in the formulation and ongoing implementation of an international strategy and Alumni Relations programme to the benefit of the Social Sciences Division and of the full Collegiate University • As appropriate, to identify, recruit and work with high-level volunteers who can assist with prospect identification and solicitation • To optimise philanthropic support for the collegiate University and to adhere to best practice in prospect cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Working closely with academic colleagues, you will be able to clearly communicate complex ideas to potential donors that align with the University’s strategic goals. You will manage a portfolio of £100k-£1m gifts, raising around £1m each year. Using your ability to maintain a large network of relationships, you will spend the majority of your time facilitating new gifts and provide stewarding for long-standing philanthropic relationships. **To Be Successful You ’ll Need:** The successful candidate will be an experienced fundraising professional with a strong track record and a confident approach to achieving ambitious income targets.
