This behaviour has been harnessed in mosquito control strategies, for example in the development of Attractive Targeted Sugar Baits (ATSBs). These baits combine sugar sources that attract mosquitoes with an insecticide that kills them upon feeding. However, the presence and abundance of local vegetation around the baits may influence their effectiveness. We are conducting a study to assess whether local vegetation impacts the performance of ATSBs across different sites in Benin and Kenya. We are seeking two Research Assistants to join our team in collecting floral trait data from the most abundant plant species at these sites. The successful candidates will also support the analysis of field-collected data. This research aims to enhance our understanding of mosquito sugar-feeding dynamics and how environmental factors influence both mosquito behaviour and ATSB efficacy. This role will involve travel to rural locations in Benin and Kenya. Responsibilities • • • • • • • • • Manage your own research and administrative activities, following guidance from senior colleagues at OxLEL. Collect floral trait data in field environments across Benin and Kenya. Contribute to wider project planning Determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses Select, follow and adapt experimental protocols as needed to suit field conditions. Gather, analyse, and present scientific data from a range of sources. Operate specialist scientific equipment both in the field and in laboratory settings. Contribute to research discussions and share findings with colleagues at partner institutions and within research teams. The Department established from August 2022 as a result of a merger between the Departments of Zoology and Plant Sciences and is preparing to move into the new state-of-the-art Life and Mind Building in 2025. The Department of Biology is recognised internationally for its research in a wide range of fields spanning all levels from molecules to ecosystems and tackling global challenges through fundamental bioscience research. Over time, the research interests of the Department have been focused on five primary themes: Behaviour & Biomechanics; Ecology & Conservation; Evolutionary Biology; Microbiology & Infectious Disease; and Molecular Plant Biology.
