About the role

 

The Department of Biochemistry are seeking to appoint a Laboratory Support Technician who will be based in the centralized Glass-washing, Media Production, and Scientific Waste Service (MGSL) and will work across two laboratories: Glass Wash and Biological Waste. The post holder will also support other MGSL team members with the Media Production service. This role includes a variety of duties to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of the laboratory facilities. 

 

This is a full-time permanent post, and the actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.  

 

About you 

 

The postholder should understand basic techniques used in a biological laboratory, with an ability to accurately and regularly follow predetermined protocols. You should be able to work with minimal supervision, as well as being able to support team members. The post requires manual dexterity with a reasonable level of physical fitness. IT skills are also essential.

About the role

 

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate with experience of structural biology techniques to join Dr Paul Elliott’s Lab to investigate the mechanisms of ubiquitin signalling within inflammation and cell death.

 

The Elliott group is embedded within the Department of Biochemistry and is at the forefront of the ubiquitin signalling field. The group employs a multifaceted approach including biochemical, biophysical and structural biology techniques (NMR, protein crystallography and cryo-EM) to address fundamental questions around ubiquitin regulation and function.

 

The post-holder will have access to state-of-the-art facilities located within the thriving Department and will employ structural biology methods to address the group’s research questions.

 

This is a full-time fixed term post funded by the BBSRC and Cancer Research UK for up to 3 years in the first instance.

The role The Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin Building (DCHB) is currently the largest research building in the University housing ~950 research staff and students. The DCHB was built in two phases, completing in 2021, and is occupied by the Department of Biochemistry and the Kavli Institute for NanoScience Discovery, an interdisciplinary research institute comprised of ~9 different departments from both the Medical Sciences Division (MSD) and Maths and Physical Life Sciences Division (MPLS). The Reception team are integral to the success of the DCH Building. They act as the public face of the building, ensuring a professional and welcoming service is provided to all visitors and users. They also play a lead role on supporting building security by overseeing the access management process. The Reception and Administrative Assistant plays an important role in supporting the delivery of key aspects of building operations. They will work with the Head Receptionist and Senior Administrator to ensure an efficient and effective reception service is provided. The post holder will require a positive and flexible approach, and a willingness to adapt to new challenges. Responsibilities Reception Duties • Act as the first point of contact for all building users, visitors and contractors to the building, ensuring a professional, welcoming appearance and environment is maintained. • Provision of reception and main entrance security to include opening Reception in the morning and/ or securing the space in the evening, ensuring the correct opening & closing procedure protocols are followed. • Support access management using the SALTO software for the DCH Building. This will include liaising with the Biochemistry HR and Safety teams, as well as the Biochemistry Teaching Office and the Administrators of other departments including the Small Research Facilities to ensure approved individuals are granted the correct access to the building in a timely fashion. • Assist with key management, ensuring keys to lockers; pedestals and DDA adjustable furniture are issued and collected as members of the building start/ leave, and that records are kept up to date at all times. • Support admin requirements such as the building’s database and Access records. • Answer telephone calls made to the building, redirecting as appropriate and then take accurate messages when needed. • Process outgoing and incoming post and ensure that it is distributed correctly. • Maintain the post ‘pigeon holes’ and ensure that old post is removed/returned if not collected. • Administer the booking process for the building’s car parking spaces and ensure records are updated. • Manage and issue as required DDA audio and fire pager equipment for the hard of hearing. • Monitor and report to the building’s Facilities Management team any Reception alarm calls. • Ensure both you and the Reception areas are kept presentable at all times. • Assist with ensuring all SOPs and ‘How To Manuals’ are all up-to-date. Communications • Assist with the production of the Biochemistry’s newsletters and regular building updates as required. • Support the maintenance of the Biochemistry intranet and the building’s SharePoint site, ensuring content is accurate and up to date. • Work with the departmental IT team to help maintain building email distribution lists such that they remain up to date and fit for purpose. Events Management • Assist with the administration of the departmental and building events as and when required. This will include the annual open day(s). • Support the arrangements for meetings, events and conferences within the building, or at other venues on behalf of the members of the department. • Provide/ oversee hospitality provision within the DCH building. • Set up and reset meeting rooms. The Elliott group is embedded within the Department of Biochemistry and is at the forefront of the ubiquitin signalling field. The group employs a multifaceted approach including biochemical, biophysical and structural biology techniques (NMR, protein crystallography and cryo-EM) combined with in cellulo studies to address fundamental questions around ubiquitin regulation and function. The post-holder will have access to state of the art facilities located within the thriving Department and will employ structural biology methods to address the group’s research questions. This is a full-time fixed term post funded by the BBSRC and Cancer Research UK for up to 3 years in the first instance. Responsibilities         Use structural biology techniques (X-ray, cryoEM and NMR) combined with biochemical and biophysical assays to investigate how ubiquitin controls the balance between cell survival and cell death. Work independently and manage their own research and the overall project to meet deadlines. Contribute to day-to-day running of the laboratory. Supervise and train junior members of the group (4th year undergraduate Master’s and DPhil students).
